? for experienced flyers traveling with carryon only...

My DS and his DF will be traveling in November with carry on case(s) only. At the airport, they will have pre-printed boarding passes. Will they need to check into the check in counter where you take the luggage - they won't be checking any, or do they go directly thru security and on to the gate and check in at the desk there? They and I have only flown with checked bags in the past, so travelling with carryon only is new to us.

No, they will go directly to the security area.

They also don't have to check in at the gate once thru security. The documents you print are your boarding pass. Once they announce boarding you will present the printed document and board the plane. They should check the monitors frequently to make sure there hasn't been a gate change.
