Football Maid

Last night was homecoming at DD's school and we were talking about all the girls and their dresses and how pretty they all looked and it brought up a question that I couldn't answer, so maybe someone here can.

Please note: If the Homecoming court is not done this way in other regions, I did not know that and am not even attempting to say that this is the way it should be done and I really and truly just asking a question.

In our court there were three 7th grade maids, three 8th grade maids and a football maid. The queen was chosen from the three 8th grade maids. The football maid can apparently be 7th or 8th grade.

The football maid at dd's school is a girl with many disabilites and in a wheelchair. I mentioned to dd that I was very proud that the student body saw past all of that and elected this very sweet, pretty girl. Dd then told me that they didn't elect her. They didn't vote on the football maid at all. The football players elected the queen from the choice of the three maids (who were elected by the student body), but they didn't elect the football maid either.

After she told me that, I thought back and I don't think we elected our football maid when I was in school either.

I never really gave it much thought before and I think its great that this girl was a part of the homecoming court. She is very deserving of the honor.

But, it just tweaked my curiosity, how is this done? I mean are there a list of girls that are deserving of being on the court but they don't think will get elected so some teacher's committee chooses them?

We didn't have a football maid, but I did want to say that my senior class elected one of my friends to be homecoming queen. She was disabled since birth and it was a very touching moment. No matter how the girl in your OP got elected, I think it's great. :)

Oh, don't get me wrong--I think so too. She was very deserving of the honor. The girl is very sweet and works very hard to accomplish every thing she does in school. Dd actually said that she probably would have been elected had she been on the ballot. That's why I started wondering about the process.

When I was in school, usually the girl that got this postion was a popular, well liked girl--just not on the ballot.

Back in my day, we only had homecoming in high school, never middle school.
And we did it, 3 freshman, 3 sophmores, 3 jr's on the court. The Sr's had 4 on the court and 1 of them would be crowned the homecoming queen.

To be on the court, during the week before homecoming week, you had to go to a room, show your id - to verify what grade you were in, and you would be given a ballet with all the grils names on for your grade. 9-11th, you voted for 4 girls, 12th voted for 5 girls. On the Monday of homecoming week, the 5 girls with the most votes, then had a seperate ballot for Sr's only on who they wanted to be crowned homecoming queen. Got the ballot the same way and voting ended on Thursday.

My son, goes to the same high school I did and they are doing it the same way still.

I never heard of a Football maid. Not in any of the schools I have been associated with.

At my very large high school we only had senior girls on the court. At my kids high school they have 1 girl from 9,10,11, and then 6 I think seniors and one of them is the queen and it is voted on by the students staring form all the girls in the classes.

This is how our homecoming court if done too. I've never heard of homecoming in middle school/junior high. Also never heard of the term maid. Is that like being in the court?

Really? All the jr. highs around here have a football team and have a homecoming game with a queen and court. But, our jr. high has a graduation (from 8th), a prom--well last year they changed the name to "semi-formal", they elect "Beauties" and "Beaus" and have a Mr. and Mrs. XXXXX (school name).

The maids are all the girls in the court that are not queen. So we have 3 7th grade maids, 3 8th grade maid and a football maid--the queen is chosen from the 3 8th grade maids.

In high school they have 2 maids from each grade, a football maid, a student body maid and the queen.

No middle school homecoming here either, and never heard the term "maid" used around homecoming. (There are 7th and 8th grade football teams, but no one goes to the games except parents.) The middle school band gets to play one song with the high school band at the homecoming game. At our school the homecoming court is a group of 10 senior girls, and the students vote for the queen.

Well, we are in the same state, and I've never been at a school that had middle school homecoming either. Maybe your school is bigger? I graduated from a 3A school, and the 4 schools I've taught at have been 2A or 3A.

The high schools have all had a football maid, chosen by the football team. The rest of the court is made up of 9-12th graders (different schools had different numbers from each grade). The queen is always a senior. My current school just took the senior maid with the most votes in the original election. The previous schools elected the maids, then had a 2nd election for queen. I was in charge of homecoming at my last school, and I had girls ask not to be put on the ballot for senior maid because they wanted to be football maid.

I went to junior high, not middle school, and we did have homecoming game but no homecoming queen or court. My high school did have homecoming complete with a homecoming queen and her court. There were something like six or eight girls elected plus the queen, who was the one who had received the most votes. They were all seniors, and the whole school voted on them. The announcement of who would be queen was made at the homecoming game. My university did the same sort of thing except that you actually had to submit your name if you wanted to run for homecoming queen and the court and queen were announced before the game and rode on a float in the homecoming parade. I've never heard of a Football Maid before.

wow! this is really interesting! I had no idea that other jr. highs/mschools didn't have homecoming.

The school dd goes to (and my sons went to before her) is really not that big. Its a community school and the 7th and 8th grade together may = 140 kids total. The school is actually k-8. Football team, cheerleaders, show choir, etc. etc. etc. is all jr. high only. Band includes 6th grade. Within in our district there are 2 other schools just like ours and they both have homecoming with a queen and court too. We are part of the county school district, the city is a seperate district and their jr. highs have homecoming too!

Most of our home games pull a pretty big crowd, especially if playing one of the other two teams in our district. Show choir competition, basketball games, fall festivals and band performances all have good attendance too. There are several older people in the community that enjoy still attending this stuff.

The high school dd will attend is 4A, I think, kids from our jr. high and one other will attend the same high school.

I am surprised that there are schools that the whole court are seniors. Our hs has always had 2 maids from each grade 9-12, the football maid and student body maids may be seniors--I am not sure about that, and the queen is a senior.

Hmmm. Learn something new everyday.

Our school is K-12 and the Homecoming court is only Seniors. There are 4 Sr. girls and 4 Sr. boys chosen by the Senior class. Then the whole upper classes (7-12) vote for who the King & Queen, who are crowned at a ceremony early in the week and they "reign" over the Homecoming week activities. It's typically the most popular kids and the King is always a football player. :confused3

Now see that is very different from anything I have ever heard of. I have never heard of boys being a part of the homecoming court. Very interesting the way different schools do this differently.

we have a large middle and high school. Over 1200 kids per school. We do not have any of these types of elections. There are no homecoming or prom King/Queen , maids at all. They did away with all that kind of thing in the 70's during womens lib.

Not saying its better, but obviously it is different then a lot of other areas.
