Okay, since the birth of my children (5 and 3) I have not been able to get a pair of shoes that fit.

I have flat(ish) feet, long toes, wide (ish) ball of foot, narrow heel, and recently developed painful case of tendinits in my big toe area.

Here are the shoes I currently own:

Birks and Lands End slides :they rub my insole/arch area
Teva Mush Filp flops:they rub the top of my foot raw
Crocs: my toes are too long for the size that should fit me,
Addidas running shoes mens: they are wider which is good but the molding around the top of my foot rubs the joint of my big toe and these hurt the outside of my foot after walking in the park all day.
Brand new nike walking shoes: These are mesh on top with no molding and wide so that is perfect however they give me blisters on my heels.

Right now I have to wear hard soled shoes to let my tendon heal but I'm just wondering what shoes I should take to DW for pain free walking? Has anyone ever gotten a mold made of their foot for inserts?

I have a lot of foot problems too. I don't have flat feet but do have the long toes, wide foot with narrow heel. In addition on one foot I had damage to my third toe when I was younger and it stopped growing with the other toes. It really throws off how my foot balance and fit.

What works best for me are Brooks athletic shoes and Croc Athens. The Brooks are super light-weight and super comfortable. They are a little pricey but my sister has an outlet store near her where I can purchase them for less than $50. A friend of mine that is a runner taught me how to tie my shoes to help with the narrow heel problem. It is hard to explain but maybe you can ask a friend or a running shoe salesman about the technique. Basically they are pulled tighter at the top.

If you can wear flipflops then the Athens Crocs are great. I can't really wear the regular crocs (caymans?) very well because my toes always hit the end in a weird way. It took awhile to get used to wearing flipflops but I just love them. I also bought the Cleos but they just don't stay on my feet well.

I had inserts a long time ago but since I've been wearing Brooks I don't have any problems.

Good luck - I know how frustrating foot problems can be.

Check out Montrail Molokini flip flops at Zappos.com. I've always recommended Teva Mush to anyone who wants comfortable flip flops, but I just got back from WDW May 13th. I carried three pair of Teva Mush, two pairs of Havaianas flip flops, and a new pair of Montrail Molokinis. The Molokini's were the best.

The one thing I don't like about the Molokini's is that the space between the toe thingy and the end of the shoe is so long (I guess to keep anyone from stepping on your toes). However, if you have long toes they would be perfect for you. When you get these shoes you bake them in a 250 degree oven for a few minutes, then stand in them, then walk around in them so that they mold perfectly to your feet (the impressions of my arch and even each of my toes showed up in the sole bed). There is no part of my sole that doesn't touch and is cushioned by the shoe's sole. Anyway these things are about $55.00 a pair, but fit every centimeter of your foot perfectly and have a wonderful soft foot bed, but good support at the same time. I preferred them over my Teva Mush (which I've always sworn were the most comfortable flip flop ever made), all my Crocs (and I have about 14 pairs of Crocs), my Reefs, and my Havaianas. They are like walking on soft pillows. My legs were tired at the end of the day, but my feet were fine.

Zappos has an unconditional free return policy, so you have nothing to lose. At least read the reviews on them at Zappos.

Try Reebok or New Balance. I have flat feet and I've always found the regular Nikes to be too narrow; wide Nikes slip at the heel. With Reebok or NB, I can wear the med. width and be comfortable.

I could never wear Birks because the arch is too high. I did just get a pair of Teva Pretty Rugged. They're pretty comfortable.
