The verdict is in...

I injured my right foot (or,I should say REinjured that foot) in New Orleans 2 weeks ago, I think. I don't remember turning it or anything, but 2 days after I got home i had some fierce pain in the arch. That has waxed and waned over the past 10 days until I finally took it to the doctor today (I know, I know. Nurses make the *worst* patients:headache:)

Anyway, the orthopedist agreed to see me this afternoon. I told him I thought it was that same post-tibial tendon that I ruptured about 6-7 years ago. I've been icing it, I've even been on crutches a few times in the last week. The pain ranges from about a 2 to a screeching 8!

The verdict is in--I have definitely injured that tendon, probably from walking on the uneven pavement in N.O., aaaaaanndd (you knew there was an "and", right?) I have damaged the tarsal nerve. All that necessitates an MRI, a brace, new orthotics, physical therapy, oral steroids, and a big honkin' shot of cortisone right INTO the tendon (yes, it hurt and yes, I cried!) He wants to reevaluate in a month.

And did I mention that I have 3--count them, 3!!--vacations coming up? I leave for a week at Favorite Brother's house next wednesday with Christian and all our baggage in tow. Then we have 8 days in Florida, mostly at the Destin. And finally, Christian and I will be going up to North Carolina for his first ever 5 night Joni&Friends camp (for kids with disabilities.)

I know the trips will be a lot of fun, but this injury comes at a bad time. It hurts to even walk around in the pool! Let alone walk around for exercise--oh, yeah, that's the other thing. Exercise has going out the window until PT evaluates the foot.

So here I sit with ice on my sore foot (if your doctor ever tells you he's going to shoot up your tendon and you'll only feel a pinch, tell him he goes first!)
:scared1:

Thanks for the update.. But I'm so sorry to hear of the damage and pain.. :(

Did he say how long all of this healing will take?

Feel better soon! :goodvibes

I can certainly feel you pain. A year ago this past May I broke a bone in the top of my foot and kept walking on it for 3 weeks before I finally went in to see the podiatrist. And because I was walking on it I also injured the tendons on the arch side from compensating for the pain...I am sure you know what I mean. I went thru xrays, shots, walking casts, boot casts, orthotics, meds, you name it I have done it...and I am still having problems with it. I just manage the pain on a day to day basis! Hope yours heals sooner than mine. I did manage a trip to WDW a few weeks ago and just "ignored" the pain and took lots of Advil!! Taking breaks each day helped a lot I think!! Good luck!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

I'm so sorry and the needle thing freaked me out.

I'm so sorry. :flower3:

Minky, I hope that cortisone shot will "take" really quickly. I've had them before for piriformis syndrome (a lot like sciatica). After the first day they really took effect completely. I know you do everything for Christian, so there's probably very little propping your feet up time. I hope you guys have a great time over these trips, with no pain.

Thank goodness my husband is able to help care for Christian! I would really be in a mess if he couldn't pick up the slack.

So far, the cortisone shot has not helped at all. In fact, the tendon feels much worse. The ortho said I have tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can take a long, long time to get better. If conservative treatment doen't help by 4 weeks he's going to recommend surgery to decompress the nerve:scared1: I fear that the nerve is very damaged--this has been happening off and on for teh past 6-7 years. But this is much worse that anything I've had since the first time.

Handbag Lady, the needle thing freaked me out, too. And I'm a nurse with 32yrs experience. Good thing I was laying down because I really felt weak and ill.:scared:

Oh Minky dog! What a trying ordeal! You've got a lot of healing to do. I hope you can manage all your vacations without hurting your foot anymore. Sounds like you need a lot of patience to heal your foot. You hang in there. I'm glad you're getting medical treatment for it.

I hope you heal quickly and completely w/o the need for any surgery or more shots .

I'm so sorry your tendon is so painful. The only thing I know about tendons is Achilles (not me, a co worker--he said they don't get much blood flow, so the healing time is longer than you'd think)

Anyway, I'll pray for you that it feels better.:hug:

What type of shoes were you wearing in NO?

Finn Comfort and Dansko shoes have been wonderful for my Plantar Faciitis. My doctor told me to throw away my Crocs. They stretch out my tendon.

Sorry about the shot. I hope it gives you relief soon.

Are you in a full boot?

I wear New Balance all the time, with orthotics as well. The ortho has me in a lace up ankle boot that goes inside my shoe. It puts the U in Ugly.

It still hurts a lot today and I have 4" red swollen stripe from my arch to my achille's tendon. PT starts tomorrow, then an MRI. Hopefully, I can rest some this weekend and be ready for next week.
