and I would have to say that for our family of 4, we spent about the same amount of money on food that we would have spent on the dining plan, but we saved huge dollars on the accommodations.
Think of it this way, the question should really be whether staying at the Beach Club is worth the extra money, because there is no way that staying at S of G without the dining plan you would spend that extra $700.
Especially if you are breakfast on the go type people, you could eat very well at the resort and all over the World and still not pay more than the dining plan. You wouldn't get all of the extra snacks and desserts probably, but with that I think that there is a lot of waste. We realized on our trip that our room was so reasonable (and rememeber, no 11% tax on the room rate or tax on admission media either) so that we didn't skimp on food at all, but we didn't end up spending more than we would on the meal plan.
Also, we really liked the convenience of the monorail and TTC at Shades of Green. Sometimes we walked to the Poly, we used the shady shuttle to take us to the Poly, and we also used the SoG busses to take us to the TTC for the express MK and Epcot monorails. Going to the other parks, the busses run every hour on the half hour (starting at either 0730 or 0830, depending on park opening) and SoG has a PRIMO bus parking spot at the TTC which saves lots of steps during bus transfers.
When I was at the pool or in the hot tub I met lots of military people, retired admiral, and a general, air force people, and Army people back from Iraq. What stories they had! (DH is a less dramatic DoD civilian employee here at home) It was very nice, and I am pretty picky. OK, very picky.
Of course, you can't lose with the Beach Club either, it is like picking between ice cream flavors, they are all great.
By the way, thank your DH for us, will you?
Jen
