My family is going to the Food and Wine Festival in October. One of my sisters and i will be renting scooters, since we have mobility issues. i was just thinking, it would be nice to rig up a food tray and cup holder for our food and wine selections, rather than trying to balance them on our laps. The scooters we are renting will have baskets on the front. i think i've seen cup holders at our local mobility store. But has anyone managed to attach a tray to a scooter? Just thinking ahead and trying to make things as easy as possible.

I've never tried it myself, but it sounds like an interesting project!

The first idea that springs to mind is to buy a plastic tray big enough to cover the built-in basket. Then:

1. Drill some holes along one side of the tray, just inside the lip
2. Run zip ties though the holes in the tray and around the top rim of the basket, forming "hinges," along the same lines as the rings in a loose-leaf binder.

That's a great idea. i think one of those plastic cafeteria trays would work well. Wonder where i could buy two of those. Maybe a restaurant supply store?

Cash and Carry, or the Dollar Store, maybe even Cost Plus?
I was thinking of a similar project to help me during F&WF this sounds like a good idea!

There are small appetizer and wine plates that you can buy. I think it'd be much better than trying to rig up a big tray.
Here's some examples: http://www.amazon.com/Prodyne-Wine-Party-Plate-COLOR/dp/B0017LASNK

I have a cup holder for my ecv basket. It's one that you would get for your car, and I think I got it in an automotive section. It hangs off the basket. If your F&W drink is in a short cup, just stuff some napkins or paper towels in the cup holder.

If you choose to go with a cup holder, then most any small plate (sturdy styrofoam) would work for you.

Not a good idea to attach spillables to the steering tiller in any way! There's too much movement...A better idea, I found, is to place a lidded basket on the deck between your feet. The deck is much more stable and the only hazard is your feet, which won't knock the basket off if you sling a belt around either the base of the tiller or the post under your seat and thread it through loops at the top and bottom of the front and back of the basket.. It'll also keep people from casually adding something to your food when you're not looking.:scared1:

I just bought a lightweight plastic toolbox for $6.00 at Home Depot. It has a lid that clamps shut (or not) and the plastic is thin enough for slicing an opening in to thread a bungee cord, or two, through. You could probably take some chunks of foam to hold your containers upright and, being all plastic it wouldn't matter if something spilled.

Good point about the tiller. i wasn't thinking of driving with food balanced on the tray. i was thinking it would be useful after getting our food then parking to eat. i suspect there will be limited tables and seating at Epcot. i do like the idea of putting a basket or box on the floor, though. Maybe that would be a good place to first put our food and drink to keep it stable, then driving and parking, then we could pull it out and use our food trays.

i did notice that the baskets on the front of the scooters are sloped. The basket on my scooter at home is sloped a little. They look more sloped in the pictures on the Buena Vista Scooter site, from which we are renting our scooters. Perhaps i can get some stick-on something, like those felt things you put on the bottom of chair or table legs. Then we could stick one, two, or more on the bottom of the tray to make it level.

i did find that i had several plastic food trays, like the kind we had in school. Got them at Target years ago and never used them. So i can practice with those to see how they would work. Ideally, it would be cool if they could be attached in a manner to easily flip up and down.
