I am thinking of keeping a journal...problem is I'm not sure how to calculate the calories in my ethnic foods. I don't follow a recipe I just add the things I was taught as a kid to taste...Writing what I eat would be the easy part. Has anyone else had this problem and figured out how to figure out (sorry for the run on)the calorie content? My ethnic foods are dominican/puertorican if that will help shed some light. I'm gonna post this question on the spanish board as well but wanted the imput of my W.I.S.H friends;)

Do any of your ethnic foods come in a "healthy" style prepared version? You could use the info from that. I've done this for a "ball park" figure with some things.

Also, this is a bit labor intensive, but I've come up with an idea of how much (measured quantity style) I put in some things, again it is not going to be an exact amount nutrition/calories, but I try to be pretty close listing ingredients. You can use this say on sparkpeople and I think on fitday as custom or group food. Since you repeat the foods you only have to enter the items once then use the group or customized food listing. I think sparkpeople let me do this as my own food group. Later I went in search of something already prepared and found one with the calories it to be similar in the way I figured. Example pierogi (think ravioli) made as our Polish grandmother taught me.

I think there might be a Web site that will let you list ingredients and it may figure calories too. I just have not taken time to find that. I know, here I am listing the things and customizing my food on these web sites I mentioned, but I have not taken time to search for a recipe calculator. If I get a moment, I'll do that. Some day.

Good job trying to get all that organized! Once you've got it you will not have all that work after since you are often repeating the recipes.

Are you a member of www.fatsecret.com ? If not, get on there - its free!! You can journal your food, and there is even a WW point calculator on it, though its wrong for several things, it gives you a great idea of what your doing. I use it every day. Good luck!

I like sparkpeople.com - they also have a recipe calculator. You add all of your ingredients and # of servings and it figures the nutritional info for each serving.

Counting calories is a lot of work at the beginning but it gets easier after you input all your favorite foods you eat most often. Also, once you make the recipe and enter it, the next time it's already there.

Thanks all, I'll try those sites...healthy versions....well they probably have them I just cook in the way my grandmother and mother taught me. I'll check out my local library maybe there are healthier versions of my favorite dishes.

I have used Dottisweightlosszone.com (DWLZ.com) for alot of WW point values. Each WW point = 50 - 60 calories. She does list some ethnic foods so you may be able to get an idea of how many calories each meal is that you make.

Look towards the middle of the page here:
