Food/Drink ideas from Kentucky **Updated with pics of final project!**

Sorry for the glare, we were right by the door that was open for people to enter.

Here we had several miscellaneous things, most of which came from ideas from you guys! We had a Louisville slugger, a Papa John's and Duncan Hines box, a bottle of bourbon (we thought initially this was inappropriate but CA had bottles of wine, so hey, we went for it!) There are a couple of books that the boys showed pics out of, a pottery bowl that was made in KY, an old newspaper from the 70s that had a front page story about Muhammad Ali, KFC bucket (they did kindly donate that!), jar of Jif, and some UK stuff. We used the blue tablecloth y'all suggested, ha ha!

Here is their project, they did a replica of Churchill Downs. The kids loved the Lego horses and people. It's not exact of course, but the boys did the vast majority of the project by themselves, so I think it's pretty good for 9 year olds. And many other parents can't say that about their kids' projects It always amazes me how other parents can obviously do all the work for their children and think that's ok. Oh well, that's a different thread!

You can also see the state bird and flower (best we could find), roses for the derby garland, some more books, a license plate, some posters on the wall, more UK stuff.

Here was their board that they made in class. They also made a power point presentation in class and the school provided the laptops for each table... they had a nice slide show with famous people from KY, famous places, some facts, etc. DS' partner brought his iPod and we had some KY music playing.

Now for the food: well, after way, way, way too much thought and discussions with other parents and the teacher, we decided to do the popcorn chicken from walmart. They said it was not necessarily about authenticity but just to give the general idea. So I ordered it, pumped myself up about paying $70 for it and blocked out all of the money that I had already spent on the derby pie ingredients , and then.... walmart called the night before and said the darn chicken trucks didn't come!!!! So, I was faced with the choice of finding something else or going back to the pies, at about 8pm the night before. So I jumped on the DISboards and reviewed all the suggestions you made again, had a quick conference with the other mom, and I ran out to walmart and bought airheads! All they had were the full-sized ones, so I ended up spending $40, arranged them in a cute basket, and I think they were the hit of the fair. And.... I have enough left over for valentine's treats for classmates, ha ha!

So, once again, you all really came through... the boys were so pleased with everything on their table, the teachers were impressed, and this weekend we are having hot browns for dinner!!! I told DS that we will definitely be planning a trip to KY soon now (I love to travel, I'll use any excuse!), and he's psyched about it! Thanks again everyone, you're the best!

Ok, here are the boys in their costumes, Abe Lincoln and my DS, Colonel Sanders! He is so shy, and he was embarassed about the costume, but all of the teachers, parents, and kids kept telling him it was the best there, so he got over that quickly! You can see an overview of the table behind them.

OMG! What a couple of cutie pies! And they did a fantastic job with the display. Especially Churchill Downs. I am very impressed.

WOW! That's impressive! They better have gotten an 'A' on this. Looks like you had to spend some money (costumes, memorabilia, etc). Great job!

The other mother and I were worried that they'd be disappointed b/c some other states went way over the top (with lots of money spent and obviously the parents doing the work), but both boys were adamant that they liked theirs the best. I think even at 9 they understand the value of their own work, and they really had fun and learned alot, which is the whole point!

sam_gordon, we really did not spend alot of money at all! I spent about $40 on the airheads and the other mom spent about $20 on the project... we used materials around the house (sandpaper for the track, for ex) and borrowed most of the memorabilia... my MIL does artifical arrangements so I got the flowers and birds from her, the school provided the paper and boards for the display, most of the other products I had in the pantry. For his costume, we used the pants from his TaeKwonDo uniform, that's an old jacket of mine (he was horrified that someone would find out it was a girls' jacket!), that is plain black ribbon for the tie, and my DH popped the lens out of some cheap sunglasses. The other mom bought her son's costume, but all we paid for was the bottle of baby powder to age his hair with ($1) and the fake beard ($2.50 at the party store)! It was extremely budget friendly, thanks to everyone's ideas!!

What about Ky Hotbrown, easy to make and a bite would be easy. You will see this all the time on buffet's at social events or fellowships throughout Ky. I see this all the time made in huge lasagna pan size and it will look layered like a lasagna. Of course I am from Eastern Ky and hadn't heard of it till we moved to Central Ky. Everything in these ingrediants would be very child and school friendly. I would do the Hotbrown with Ale-8

So I re-read your post and I think mini-Jif peanut butter sandwiches.

I hate the smell of that factory. It's HORRIBLE!!! And totally not what you would think.

Lol...meeeee, too. When we were kids, we'd ride past there and I always thought it was the smell of the Purina factory right next to it but nooooo...the peanut butter smells sooo gross.
