Food Allergy and Beaches & Cream

So I have a reservation for Beaches and Cream one of my afternoons. I'm allergic to mint (odd, I know), and I go into anaphylaxis when exposed to it.

I figure the only risk I have would be cross-contamination from the ice cream scoop. Would they think I'm crazy for asking them to wash the scoop before doing my ice cream? Would I just tell the waitress?

Not crazy at all. We make that request virtually everywhere we order ice cream and at Disney I would think once an allergy is mentioned they likely expect that would be the least they would do.

The ice cream you want could already be contaminated from previous orders if a thoroughly cleaned scoop wasn't used. My daughter has a severe peanut allergy, and at Beaches and Cream we have always been able to get ice cream from a newly opened container, prepared in the back away from all peanut products. We've never even had to ask. As soon as we mention the peanut allergy, that's what they offer. We've had the same experience at other WDW restaurants that serve ice cream.

Tell them when you first arrive- which I would be sure to do at every dining location. It is better that they know then that you assume they aren't putting mint in some random thing. At that point, because is is an uncommon (not top 8) allergen and there is no specialty menu they should have a chef or manager come speak to you. They can then be sure there is no risk of cross contact, because it would be terrible if they prepped your food in the same location they made some random limited edition mint themed dessert 5 minutes before, or even where they just chopped a mint dessert garnish. (which we all know would only happen on the day the person with the mint allergy is there!) Especially if you mention it has caused anaphylaxis in the past nobody is going to think you are crazy to ask.

Thank you! I always feel like a bother with my allergy and so I do a poor job advocating for myself. :/

I know, I think everybody feels that way. It's my son with the allergies so I've made sure point out to him every time we were so sure we didn't need to ask and then found out they put one of his allergens in a totally unexpected item.

The Ben & Jerry's inside Universal Studios Islands of Adventure did this as well. I gather they have a whole allergy protocol.
