follow up question to the trick or treat/candy threads

I love it when we get stuff other then candy! My kids eat popcorn all the time, so I when I went shopping for candy with my mom.. We went to costco and got a huge case of popcorn to give out. the only time I have ever said WTH??? Was when a family had the kids pick candy out of a bowl.. I checked what each kid had before they dropped them in their buckets.. It was cough drops!!:scared1: But I think juice boxes, pretzles, popcorn, all that stuff is great!

I remember growing up, after we finished trick or treating we would dump out all of our goodies onto our beds and sort through them. "chocolate pile", "hard candy pile", "non edible pile", "gum pile", "sour pile", etc.

We would then throw everything that we didn't like into a big bowl and our parents would sift through it throughout the week and eat whatever they wanted but most of the rest either went to their work or got thrown out.

So I vowed that when I got my own place I would only hand out "the good stuff" since I know it would never get thrown out (whether the kid ate it or the parents did lol) I've been living on my own now for 18 years and I've always handed out the little chocolate bars (usually a huge variety) because I KNOW those would NEVER get thrown out!!! LOL

This is the first year that my boys aren't going out ToTing (they're 13 and 15 and don't want to this year) They're more into decorating our garage and handing out the candy. Anyhow, when they brought their candy home after ToTing we would sort out what they didn't want and hand it back out to other ToTers, that way we didn't feel so bad at throwing out candy. And IF (now that's a big IF) we had any little chocolate bars leftover, there's enough adults that hang out in our garage on Halloween that they're gone by the end of the night anyhow.

We have a lot of food allergies and know of many who do and are diabetic so we started handing out pencils, erasers, new in bag happy meal toys (doubles from my girls), stickers a few years ago.

Plus with extra they can't have we give tot he guys at work. Many dont have kids or littleones who still T or T so they enjoy it and it doesn't go to waste.

As kids we would sort through our stuff and trade with each other if we had stuff we didn't like but someone else did. When the kids were little after a week or so all of the candy just got put into a large bowl and everyone just ate from that. Now the dang kids hide their bags in their rooms so we can't steal candy :lmao:. They eat most of it but there is some stuff they don't like and doesn't get eaten. We haven't donated any of that because that left over pile isn't really created until around Christmas :lmao:.

It goes against my Halloween spirit to hand out anything BUT candy. :lmao:

We live close to a dairy, and the man who owns it hands out small bottles of chocolate milk on Halloween. Boy is he popular!!!

I hand out chocolate mostly, since that's what the kids want. After my kids have sorted out their loot, I take the unwanted piles and put them in baggies for Christmas. We use them to decorate gingerbread houses. Anything left after that is tossed!

I remember "back in the day" getting homemade donuts, popcorn balls, sweet rolls, etc., when we went trick-or-treating. We loved that. It's too bad we can't do that, but I understand the reasoning. Of course, I lived in a tiny town where we all knew everyone! Ah, the good old days!

My parents always gave out backs of potato chips (we had a large name brand potato chip factory nearby) and as a kid I was not a fan. We had one neighbor who always gave away raisins, Blech! Most kids skipped his house. We had another neighbor who was a clown who used to give out candy & balloon animals, his house always had a line.

I usually give out chocolate. One year we tried giving out play doh canisters with mini milky ways and a lot of parents were very rude to me & made their kids give it back. I couldnt believe how grown ups acted in front of their children. I didnt realize play doh was hated by so many people, still not sure why.

I do not have any children, not sure wht everyone hates play doh so much. My nephews enjoyed it when they came over.

We had a neighbor who gave out fun bandaids and then did a "trick" (Magic) each time a group of kids was at his door.

We've received Halloween themed pencils and erasers. We've received popcorn packs, prezel packs, chips, etc.

We give out candy. My dh usually takes any leftovers (and the stuff ds doesn't want) into work. :thumbsup2

I wanted to hand out the little bags of pretzels but my 17yo DD said that we would be TP'd I did that.

We have a dentist in our area who buys back candy the next day for $1 per pound, he them send it to the troops.

We let the kids pick out their favorites, then take the rest to the dentist. The past several years we've gotten so much at MNSSHP, we've given that out at halloween in addition to our stuff.

for DS8 class I give gummies, small packs of cookies and small bags of micro popcorn.

We don't give out candy at home, no kids in neighborhood . I buy my friends house who we visit small bags of pretzels.

I'm a preschool teacher. Parents hate play-doh because it's messy. Pretty much the same with finger paint. It's sad, the number of children we have every year who have never touched paint or play-doh. I get some who have never had crayons either. :sad2:

I gave out chocolate and hot chocolate packets last year and the hot chocolate was much more popular. And the kids loved the fact that there was left-over of both!

I ran out of candy last year and handed out fruit snacks. I actually should go and buy a big box again, its cheaper than candy I think! For a large box of 100 I think the wholesale club sells it for $5.00....something else for the to do list!!
