In the second installment of J. Hill's Discoveryland piece he has a rumor about the fate of COP and potential replacement
Provided that the budget can finally be approved, look for the “Carousel of Progress” to stop spinning sometime in late 2003 / early 2004 (No exact close date has been selected yet). Then look for the “Flying Saucers” to land at Lake Buena Vista just in time for help kick off Disneyland’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration – which starts in January 2005
About six months ago Screamscape had a similar rumor.

We have to assume COP has limited time left. Would this be a good replacement? I'm a little worried that the idea has been on the books for many years. I would hope such a ride would take full advantage of the latest technology, and not get too caught up in some "nostalgia" play.

I agree, the original Flying Saucers don't look to be terribly exciting, so any new version would need to be improved not only with technology, but with themeing/story.

As always, I'll withold final judgement until I actually see an attraction, but the Flying Saucers thing has me more than just a tad skeptical.

Of course, it maybe a moot point anyway, given the slow rate of new attractions.
