Hi Everyone

I am flying out of YYC (Calgary) with a tight layover and connection out of Pearson on Westjet My question is do I need to collect my luggage in Toronto to take it through US Customs? Trying to decide if I am just going to do Carry on so I don't miss my connection.

No need to collect your luggage - it will be moved on for you. Have a great vacation!

Arriving from within Canada connecting to the USA:

When connecting to the United States from within Canada, if your baggage is checked-through to your final destination you will not claim your checked-bags in Toronto. Please confirm this with your airline when you check in for your first flight. You will also need to ensure that you have a boarding pass for your connecting flight – if you do not, contact your airline for instructions. Upon arrival, follow the signs for F Gates for Terminal 1 departures or A Gates for Terminal 3 departure. Please note you will need additional security screening in Toronto and will pre-clear US Customs before you may access your departure gate.

You will clear US Customs in Calgary on the way out. Nothing more needed; when you disembark at your final location, just collect your luggage and be on your way.

No you won't. You clear US customs before you enter the airside transborder section of an airport that offers the service. YYC to YYZ is a domestic flight. They will fly from Calgary domestic to Pearson Terminal 3 domestic. Deplane, go through US pre-clearance security and US customs before entering the Terminal 3 transborder area. I don't have as much experience with Terminal 3 because I more regularly fly Air Canada but I believe you land in B Gates and need to transfer to A Gates.

When you get your bag tag, just make sure it says MCO on it.

:confused3OK - I don't remember ever not going through Customs in Calgary even on connecting flights to US destinations, but you seem to know what you're talking about.

I also second the fact that you do not clear US customs until Toronto. YYC-YYZ is a domestic flight.

It is quite the walk usually though, and you also need to clear security again. So you need like 40 mins minimum.
