Flying Out of Buffalo - what's the catch?

We always fly from Pearson. This year for 4 of us (2 adults, 3 yr old and a baby) to Orlando will cost $1750 at the end of April (there are flights just a bit cheaper but the flight times are very early morning - we don't like those).
Just for fun I thought I would see how much it would cost for us to fly out of Buffalo. On Jet Blue it came to $680 TOTAL. Wowzers. And decent flight times. What a difference!
It takes us 2.5 hours to drive to Pearson. According to google maps it would take us 3.5 hours to drive to Buffalo.
What am I missing here? Is it awful to drive across the border? Is Buffalo airport scary? Is there any reason that we should not fly out of Buffalo? We are so comfortable flying out of Pearson, we do it so often.......change is scary!!! But wow, the $$$ difference. Any feedback or advice is welcome! :thumbsup2

We only fly out of Buffalo! The airport is much smaller, the parking is reasonable, you go through customs at the boarder (not the airport).... there is no catch!

...and Jetblue is amazing!

No catch at all, we fly out of Buffalo often! As PP said, you cross customs when you drive across the border, so you don't have to do it again at the airport. Depending the time of day or what day, there may be a wait at the border crossing but shouldn't be too bad. We always drive down the night before our flight so we don't have to worry about that.

Yes the prices are quite cheap they don't pile on the taxes on flights in the U.S. like they do here!

I agree with other posters -- no catch at all. You're through customs by the time you get to the airport, which is small and very easy to get around. Parking costs are as reasonable as the costs for flights. If you try Buffalo once you'll never go back to Pearson again!

Completely agree :thumbsup2 . Though we prefer Syracuse to Buffalo, only because the airports are very similarly sized and its a shorter drive for us. We would choose to fly from SYR even if Jetblue's prices were the SAME cost as flying out of Toronto.

No catch. Some people complain about the drive. But it's worth it to us. Buffalo is probably 1/10th the size of pearson so maybe you spend more time in your car but less time in line.

We've travelled to Orlando for thirteen trips to WDW over the years. Our initial trip we drove thinking that would be the only time we'd travel there (yep, right - we all know how that goes ;) )
The next time we flew out of Pearson and when the airbus driver dropped us off back at home asked why we didn't fly out of Buffalo? :scratchin
Well, that was 2005 and we've flown out of Buffalo many, many times since then. The cost, convenience and proximity to our home makes it so easy to go to WDW (maybe too easy :rotfl2:). We always book a park & fly package at one of the airport hotels, too!
If you decided to fly out of Buffalo, I don't think you'd regret it!

The catch is... you have to budget some time on your return day to do your cross-border shopping before you drive back to Canada! :cool1:

I love flying out of BUF because I don't bother shopping for anything when I'm in FL -- I always stop at the Niagara outlet mall and Supermarket Liquors for my duty free on the way back to Queenston/Lewiston.

Flying out of Buffalo is awesome. It's a pretty easy and simple airport compared to Pearson. I will fly out of Buffalo over Toronto anyday. Not having to go through customs at MCO is super handy too.

JetBlue is a great airline too.

You have nothing to worry about.

We fly out of BUF a lot! It's so easy, and so much cheaper to park too. We drive down the night before, get a hotel/parking package and then take the morning flight to nice sunny FL. So worth it!

This is what we do. We love flying out of Buffalo! There really is no catch! :)

I agree, great airport to fly out of! The only catch would be if flying during the winter. Had one flight cancelled and one long delay. Buffalo gets a lot of snow.

Good point.

We flew out of Buffalo in December. No flight delays. But the drive to Buffalo was treacherous. :scared1:

How are you all getting cheap flights out of Buffalo to MCO? I've been checking for the last couple weeks and they are by no means cheap... $500 and up! What's the trick to finding good priced flights out of Buffalo? (morning flights)

Book them as soon as flights are released. Prices usually start low and continue to go up.

Darn! I missed that time! I wasn't thinking about flights out of Buffalo when flights were released. :worried:

I'm hoping prices of flights out of Toronto go down a bit too.

I see you are going in August. SW flights open March 3rd for Aug. 8-Oct. 31st. Does that help you?

Yes!! Thank you! I assumed all the airlines had already released their flights for the time we're headed for Disney. I'll have to keep an eye out. I'm a newbie when it comes to flying out of the US.

I usually follow Southwest and JetBlue on Twitter when I'm looking for flights to be released. I booked my last flights on my phone as soon as JetBlue tweeted that they had released the flights I wanted.

Thank you for all the replies! And I did it! I booked it! :rotfl: We are booked flying out of Buffalo Yippeee! And what a low price. $120 each down, and $99 each home. Crazy!:cool1:

And 10 glorious days in a 4 bedroom presidential at Wyndham Bonnet Creek........:)
