which if better? Flying Fish or Yachtsman? Husband in restaurant business and very picky

Both have very good food. It just depends on what kind of food you feel like... If you want steak, go to Yachtsman, anything else, go to FF. I'd advise squeezing both into your trip if you can.

I agree they are VERY different. Flying fish is although is upscale in food is a little more laid back, a bit louder and is seafood. Yachtsman is steak, and a bit more serious.

I'd like to add - Yachtsman definitely offers basic "meat and potatoes" fare...if you decide that's what you want. However, if you're looking for more exciting options, Yachtsman has plenty on the menu that's creative and interesting. This Colorado spring lamb entree that I had in May, for example, was an incredible dish - more memorable than the food I've had at Flying Fish.

Both are good choices - if I had to pick one, it'd be Yachtsman (even though I prefer seafood over meat).

Yachtsman is our favorite. We walked in to Flying Fish one time and walked back out - did not care for the atmosphere (very loud and chaotic).

Yachtsman is a place where you can relax and enjoy - the food is wonderful!

yachtsman is very bland for "upscale" steak. though nothing has ever been outright bad that we've had there...nothing has been what i would call "expertly" prepared. The quality of the meats are good...but they tend to be presented bland.

The "chain" upscales - morton and ruth chris do a much better job with their steaks. Yachtsman needs to watch a bobby flay program or two...as they do nothing interesting with sauces or rubs...and that's all you really need to do to make a good steak standout.

I would say flying fish is your better bet. And recommend the grouper for your husband.

It's ironic...but i feel the two most overrated restaurants at WDW are both the "steakhouses" - yachtsman and le cellier.
My only explanation is that many people aren't exposed to "good" steak.

I beg to differ - I've been to enough upscale steakhouses for a lifetime (Ruth's Chris, Morton's, Smith & Wollensky, Peter Luger, Cut, Craftsteak, BLT Steak, etc). Yachtsman still impresses me as a restaurant, and I'd take it over most of these chains (definitely over Ruth's Chris, Morton's, Smith & Wollensky, and Peter Luger).

I agree that both a excellent choices. Our experience (and my husband is a chef) is that we prefered the Flying Fish. We had an early ressie so it wasn't very loud and chaotic when we were there...the staff was attentive and the meals were exceptional. While I had seafood, my DH had the char crusted steak here and said he felt it was better quality and taste compared to the steak he had eaten at the Yachtsmen the night prior.

The Yachtsmen did not disappoint us either, but was a more upscale quieter atmosphere. I had the best escargot there as an appetizer and my steak, although cooked slightly more well done than I prefer, was good. My husband had no complaints about ANY portion of the meal.

I'd recommend trying both if you have the time!

Love the FF! although giving it a miss this year to try the Yachtsman, so really hoping we won’t be disappointed.

I enjoy both, but to me the Yachtsman is a step below Ruths Chris or Mortons. In fact, I would tell people to go to Shula's over at the Dolphin before eating at the Yachtsman.

The Flying Fish is a step above the Yachtsman, and the steak is better at the Flying Fish.

well...there are certainly differing tastes...but i just don't think i've ever had an above average steak at yachtsman's...and i sure as heck have tried.

the concourse steakhouse provided at least 3 better steaks than i've had at yachtsman's...it's not the cut - it is the lack of prep that gets it.

though i agree with you that some "high class steakhouses" aren't going to appeal to everyone...peter luger is a bloodbath...which some people love, but isn't for everybody - ruth chris can be pedestrian very much these days.

Bobby Flay: Steak didn't impress me much either. i guess it all depends on the day and the bovine

but yachtsman's has been thoroughly underwhelming...and i keep going back and "get it right"...but after i take out a loan to pay for my dinner - it still just never feels right.

Steak never really 'wows' me anywhere. The best steak I've had in the US was probably at BLT Steak. Aside from that, nothing else strikes me as any better than the filet or strip steak I've had at Yachtsman.

Sorry to hear that you've always been underwhelmed there. Our first meal at Yachtsman (way back in 2004) disappointed us. Our second time, we ordered badly. All of our meals since then (our third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth times) have been some of the best meals we've had in WDW. We eat regularly at all the signatures, and Yachtsman is currently our second favorite behind Artist Point. While we've also had great meals at Flying Fish, Jiko, Citricos, Cali Grill, Narcoossee's, and Brown Derby, these locations have less frequently wowed us (and have disappointed us more than Yachtsman). I guess everyone's dining experiences are different - I never thought I'd prefer a steakhouse over restaurants with more seafood, but Yachtsman has earned our respect. :)

This.

In fact, we did not enjoy Yachtsman all that much...from Nebraska and the steaks were not up to Nebraska standards. We had the rib steak...have bought better ribeyes at our small-town Nebraska grocery store.

Flying Fish...we loved. :thumbsup2

We've never eaten at FF, but we love Yachtsman...the filet is awesome and the atmosphere is very nice too, IMO :goodvibes.

We've eat at both. We found FF very noisy. We could not hear ourselves.
The food was okay. DH gets the snapper and enjoys it. Yatchsman is IMHO more laid back and a more enjoyable experience. What matters to us is how we enjoyed the meal, not just the taste. Our favorite waiters are at YC. We never seem to recognize any at FF.
