Flying Aer Lingus via Dublin for the first time.

We've been members of Virgin's flying club since the early nineties and always used them when flying direct to Orlando but with so many Dis-members singing the praises of flying with Aer Lingus from their local airport via Dublin to Orlando and also with competitive prices to Virgin at the time of booking we took the plunge and booked with Aer Lingus for the very first time.

The one-hour Saturday Aer Arann flight to Dublin was less than half full and although taking off 30-minutes late it didn't matter as there was a 3-hour wait at Dublin for the flight to MCO. They didn't weighed our carry-on's and our checked baggage was labelled for onward travel to MCO so we never needed to handle them at Dublin.

We were surprise to find we were the only passengers on that flight connecting onto MCO, upon landing at Dublin we were taken with about 10 other passengers on a short bus ride to the departure lounge at T2. As you entered through the doors there's a row of tables with customs declaration forms and pens, after filling one out we joined a queue and soon passed through the first check by an airport staff member who was also checking to ensure our luggage had been processed, (off-loaded from the short-flight with a photograph taken of it).

Once passed that quick check you join either the US or non-US line for immigration, there were 3-Officers checking the non-US line and it was just like being in the States, the immigration Officer also shows you a photograph of your luggage on his screen and you just need to acknowledge that it's yours, after immigration you have a short walk to the next check of screening and x-raying of carry-on's.

From touching-down at Dublin through to passing that last check it took us 55-minutes. We then looked for a place to have breakfast and soon realised our first mistake, we could only find a small food counter serving sandwiches, paninis and hot and cold drinks; we had been looking forward to a full-breakfast so had to make do with hot paninis, next time we would have a full-breakfast at our local airport.

There's only a few shops so if you're hoping to buy duty-free either do it at your local airport or wait until you arrival back into Dublin on your return, there's a good selection of shops (with some reasonable prices in Pandora), check out the shops at http://www.dublinairport.com/gns/shops-restaurants/the-loop/terminal-2.aspx

The loading of passenger didn't take that long but we did have to wait for some passengers on a delayed flight from Paris, so we took off about 25-minutes later than planned and also arrived later by about the same time.

We were on the road within an hour of landing and a large part of that time was down to a 20-minute wait in picking up the Alamo car.

The flight food was okay, no complaints but we did have to pay $5 or €7 for a glass of wine, we were seated in economy and the legroom on the A330 was okay, might have been 32 inches whereas Virgin I think was-is 31 inches and there was a good selection of films-entertainment http://www.aerlingus.com/inflight-e...-entertainment/longhaul/entertainment/movies/

We arrived more refreshed than any flight we've ever taken from Gatwick, we had a longer sleep the night before, friends drove us to the local airport which is only 25 minutes away and we didn't have that 3-4 hour drive on the M4-M25-M23.

So on this occasion we found this to be a much better alternative than flying direct from Gatwick, so many thanks to those who have highlighted this in their posts as an option, especially with the US pre-clearance facility.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2::thumbsup2

Thanks for the walkthrough. :thumbsup2

I am seriously considering taking an indirect route for future trips and this is one of the options I had been thinking about.

Nice to hear that it was all positive :cheer2:

i loved it last september and hoping to take it next year too just not having to go true customs in mco is worth it to me

We have done this twice now and it's great. The knowledge that once you land in Orlando you can just head right out of the airport and not wait for ages after a long flight.

I agree about the lack of places to eat after immigration it's not great but I'm normally to excited to eat before we fly so a light snack is fine by me.

Check if your local airport does shop, and collect for duty free, we used the service at Edinburgh on a recent trip (non disney) and we just picked up what we bought when we got back. Saved carrying stuff with us and back.

Thank you for the report. Use them for the first time on Aug 1st.
Considering using them again in Oct, Manchester to Boston, just now £516pp, Delta £447pp but times not as good as Aer Lingus. Keep hoping the price drops but it hasn't yet.

That's a great tip, we did noticed signs 'Buy in-store and collect on return' at our local airport so we might well be using that next time, did it take you long to pick up your duty free when returning to Edinburgh?

Nope we walked up to the desk and it was just a case of sign here and that was it. Really handy plus you don't have to worry about the excess liquids thing.

Oh and I forgot too add by June all long haul Aer lingus flights will have wifi on board.

Hi thanks for the review on aer lingus.
Just wondering if you noticed where the lounges are (think its called Gold circle lounge -bit like v-room type thing)? Hoping it's after immigration but guessing probably not :( Just wondering if it would be worth paying for if we still need to allow loads of time to get through immigration?

It's not its before immigration but its really nice if you have time. We had five hours to kill between flights home two years ago so it was good to get a nice shower and a nap in the quiet area. It's really nice and on two levels with the quiet area and showers up stairs.

I would say an hour to get through unless its quiet the staff will let you know if you are too early we got told we were too early and to cone back in an hour as there was not much after you get through. They were calling people to the front of the line for flights leaving before the Orlando one so that was good.

Thanks so much for the info :) Great to know they'll let you know if you are too early :thumbsup2

Yes they are really helpful and the American immigration people are really nice and super friendly think the que gets so long as they are busy chatting to everyone lol.

Am I right in thinking when you arrived at MCO you only had to get your cases and leave because the immigration bit is all at Dublin?

Yes, we just made our way from the aircraft direct to the AGT System (like the monorail train) which transported us to the main terminal and baggage claim carousels, picked up our bags so no immigration and just like arriving on an internal-domestic flight.

Yes that's the best landing knowing that you don't have to stand in a massive line. :)

Thank you that's good news. The queue was horrendous last time although that was five or so years ago.

Yes and with the problems of staffing etc i believe they have been pretty bad.

On our last day we visited SSR and got speaking to a British couple who had arrived two weeks earlier on Virgin's last flight of the day and told us that they weren't allowed to disembark because there were 4-other jumbo's being processed. They were held waiting on board for 30-minutes and then had to join a long line in the immigration hall which took them nearly 90-minutes.

And if I remember rightly we also experienced a 15-20 minute wait after we landed at MCO on Virgin's last flight of the day in February 2012 followed by about an hour's wait in the immigration hall, so yes pretty bad and seems to be getting worst. But hey we did only pay £327 with miles plus money for that flight, those were the days.......

Ouch that sucks I just want to get going when we get there. I think we will be sticking with the pre clearance at Dublin as long as we can

When i looked into Aer Lingus they only flew on a tuesday & saturday, do they increase flights in peak season or does anyone think they might add more flights?

We fly Thursday 1st August so they have 3 flights a week early August, see their timetable here http://www.aerlingus.com/cgi-bin/obel01im1/bookonline/timeTables.do?topnavtab=information_tab

Doubt they will add more in the near future, they are better filling the planes that go rather than adding more and risking half empty. Maybe if they can keep making a profit thru the hard times they will add more when things get better but don't see that happening within 5 years myself.
