Flooring question...

We are picking out flooring for the new log home, and I am considering slate. Can anyone tell me if it is difficult to take care of? I know it must be sealed occationally. How bad a job is that, and how often must it be done?

I don't know about true slate, but our living room has a slate look tile that we love. Our hearth is slate and seems to take all sorts of abuse.
