There's no FP+ available for this, right? How early would you suggest lining up for a show to get a seat toward the front? Are the best seats in the front?

1. FP has been discontinued for FoW.
2. Arrive 15-20 minutes before show-time.
3. If you want to be closest to the human cast, certain birds and other small animals in the show, then, yes.
But, there are some aspects of the show that take place in the rear, and in the middle, and all over the seating area.

I've never had an issue with getting a seat. There is always room in the open-air theater. It's one of my favorite shows. Helped me get over my F.O.B. - fear of birds. lol

The theater, while still "open-air" (no walls,) has recently had a full roof installed over it.
That roof has caused some uneasiness for some of the birds in the show, so they've had to go through some retraining for those birds made skittish by the top now being covered.

When I saw it I didn't even know what it was and walked up on it while they were letting people in. I got a seat in the back by choice and it was an awesome show. The birds were adorable.

Quite honestly, you don't want to be on the ground and near the stage. We've found (and we go to the show every time we are at Animal Kingdom) the best seats are in the right hand side bleachers about four rows from the top. *cough* *cough*. That's all I will say. Just have a camera ready.

Yep, sometimes they have training sessions between shows, so if you hang around a bit instead of leaving immediately, you might get to see one. They like to have some audience in the theatre, because it makes the training more realistic. They'll try to spread you out over the bleachers and tell you to clap loudly, as if it's a real show.

We were highly entertained last time by their attempts to train a rather large, leggy bird. It seemed to have got the idea that it might get multiple treats, if it refused to go backstage. :) One woman near the back had it land directly behind her and put his head over her shoulder to stare at the trainer. She looked a bit nervous!

Agree that the best seats for FOW are not necessarily in front. We have never had a problem getting a seat, either.

I don't know why they needed to install the roof. It wasn't that hot or sunny in there. In fact, I would think it would be even more warm with the roof now. I was bummed that we didn't get to see it in March. We will definitely hit it in July though.
