Gang question for you Canadians flying out of Canada and using DME...

I know for international travellers you need to collect your luggage and bring it to DME for them to then transfer the luggage to the hotel etc. This is done because you need to go through customs etc at Orlando... but in Canada (at least the airports I've travelled from) we go through US customs at the airport here... Can we check in our luggage here and it be delivered straight or do we still need to collect our luggage?

You do not need to collect your luggage if you've cleared US customs on the way in at the Canadian airport.:yay:

If you clear customs before you arrive in the Orlando airport, you can put the DME yellow tags on your luggage and let them pick them up. All you need to do is check in and board the bus. They will deliver your baggage to your room in about 3-6 hours.

You've already gotten the answer for the way down.

Unfortunately, you cannot check your luggage in at the resort check-in desks on the way home even though you will pass through customs at home and you go through domestic security at the airport. But, the computer says it's an international flight anyway.

That's not too much of a biggy for the going home portion :)

Charters unfortunately make you do customs in the USA. So if you ever fly Sun Wing for ex. you'll have to claim your bags first then hand them back over and let DME take them.

Why do you say 'unfortunately'? Could going through Customs in Orlando be worse than doing it Toronto (because of line-ups I imagine?) We are landing on a Thurday morning at 11:00 am, maybe it won't be so bad?

If you go through customs in Canada, then, when you land in Orlando you can just walk to DME and get on the bus for your resort without waiting for your luggage.

If you have to go through customs in Orlando, you'll still need to arrive at the airport in Toronto 90 min before your flight, but, when you get to Orlando you'll also have to wait in a customs line and wait for your baggage. Still, if you got a cheaper airfare, it's likely worth the wait.

Oh for sure worth the wait. My flight this Dec was less than $375 with Sunwing. So i'll deal with doing customs at MCO instead of YYZ. It's just kinda nice to get them over and done with while still at home. As a solo young male traveller they like to grill me a bit harder than the avg person. I've had my luggage searched once checked everytime. I have no issues with it because I am just going to WDW, all their gonna find is clothes and pins. :)
