Flight in Mco the morning on the same day cruise departure

Bumbershoot, I hate to give you a "like", as your DH did not have any experience to "like". But I do agree with you (so you got the like).

You're so sweet. :) They need a button for "I acknowledge you" or something.

It worked out. The savannah hotel (which was non refundable) held (is still holding) his room. The plane from ATL made it and turned around quickly and he got to ATL. At almost 3am. He was supposed to have left EWR (sorry, I said JFK, but that's where he flew into a few days before) at 3ish the afternoon before. I was able to find him a hotel for those few hours of sleep in Atlanta and a rental car to get himself over to savannah. He's currently driving.

This is all for work and work understands travel issues. It if he'd had something to do last night or this morning it couldn't have happened. If he were racing for a cruise (out of Savannah?) he might well make it but it would take the whole cruise to relax again lol.

And what was crazy is that his work TA could do nothing. HE was the one that got his flight refunded and then rebooked. I was the one to do all the hotels. No one even thought of routing him to one of two cities in SC that are closer to Savannah than Atlanta. (I was in yoga class oblivious to the start of this and by the time I got home and started working on it those flights were full) So much for a TA being of assistance!!!

Here's my story... Last September we were traveling from providence to Orlando. We boarded our flight and we're looking like we would be early! We talked about what we could do at Disney that night! We were flying for a bit when my husband said we were flying in circles and I said he was crazy. Sure enough a few minutes later the pilot came on and said hey we are flying in circles due to some issue. One that caused our plane to fly real low and not be able to land back at providence. We flew around waiting do an airport with a larger runway to take us and burn off some fuel. We finally emergency landed at Hartford! Once we were stopped the plane couldn't taxi due to the brakes or wheels being too hot. Once we were in their airport they got people with connections where they needed to go. There was no room on any plane to get out earlier. One girl was upset about going to miss her cruise and they did help her but she was alone. We had to wait for a plane which kept getting delayed and a new crew. All in all I should have been checked in to my hotel before dinner and didn't until about 2am.

Also if you are flying in the day of how early do you have to get up? Leave your house at dark 30 to be at the airport 2 hours before your flight??? That makes a very long day and you may be to tired to enjoy the 1st day/ night of your cruise.

We have 7 people. First time cruise, will go on the fantasy cruise on 8/13
I'm thinking to take the flight to Mco in the morning of 8/13, arrive Mco
Around 10am. Are there any possible weather delay around that time of year.
Will this be a ok idea? Thinking to cut expenses.
Thanks!

As an airline employee who just watched about 20 people miss a cruise due to weather, I wouldn't recommend it. Keep in mind, it's not just the weather in your home city or MCO that effect delays. There could be weather anywhere that could delay your plane, crew, etc.

forget the weather for a moment. Our relative was delayed on the tarmac for hours (just recently) out of West Palm (PBI) because of an indicator light (it indicated a problem with a flap...it was just a sensor error or some such).....you don't have to have bad weather to louse up your vacation....maybe a fender-bender otw to the airpiort....a flat tire....bad weather on the arriving plane which delays your departure.....
Totally agree with this. My DS went to France last month with a school group. They had just taken off and were in the air for about 20 minutes when the cockpit filled with smoke and they had to turn around immediately and return to the airport. They ended up being delayed 26 hours.

On our first cruise we didn't know any better and flew in the day we set sail. That was the only time we did that, way too stressful to try to get to the port on time. We have cruise # 13 coming up next month and we'll spend 3 nights at the Poly before heading off on the Fantasy.

I'm in the "no way" camp! We travel a lot and have had our fair share of delays due to weather, mechanical issues, etc. We've had two 5 hour delays heading down to MCO and just last week we were on a flight that arrived on time, but we had to wait on the tarmac another 45 minutes because they couldn't get the jet bridge to connect to the airplane door. There are just too many things that could go wrong. We will be on a 10 am flight the day before our August cruise to give us more than a 24 hour cushion to get on that ship.

The only way I would consider it is if it was a direct flight, first flight of the day. But we would prefer to drive for hours than fly. When you fly, anything can happen.

Just thinking-- with 7 people, if you are trying to save money, you should drive. Even if it is a very long drive, I bet it's a lot cheaper than flying.

Might not be the airfare they are thinking of, but the extra hotel night. And if it's a long drive, if they are doing it safely, that's going to involve a hotel night.

Update on DH who was caught in the 3000 delayed and 700 cancelled flights the other day (he had first one then the other), he might have finally caught up on sleep. Being at the airport for 12 hours, a 3 hour flight, landing at 3am and driving to a hotel, not much sleep time to get into the car and drive 4 hours...he was exhausted!

If he'd caught a cruise yesterday he wouldn't have been very relaxed!

I wouldn't chance it, at all.

I've had a 7 hour delay from MCO to Toronto
I've had two overnight delays from Paris to Toronto, and London to Toronto (not the same airline)
And a full cancellation from Amsterdam to Prague (with the next available flight two days away because they were fully booked)

and numerous multi-hour delays domestic or international. So no, I would never do that if I'm going on a cruise..

@bumbershoot Glad things worked out for your DH!

Maybe it's just me, but at the cost of a cruise for 7 ppl, even if a bunch are kids, The cost of 2 hotel rooms for one night seems worthwhile to help ensure a good start to the cruise.

Here is a timely thread:

I missed a connecting flight once because the co-pilot on the first flight got food poisoning the night before and couldn't fly that morning. We had to wait for another pilot.
This is sort of how our Toronto -Paris flight was delayed (it was Toronto to Paris, not the other way around..I think I mis typed). Initially it was a mechanical thing, and finally when it was fixed, it was close to midnight and we had to have a third pilot due to regulations, and we had to wait for that third pilot to fly in from Montreal. However, his flight arrived after midnight (or 1am, whatever hour) and the regulation was no take off after a certain time. So we had to wait for the next day.

We certainly weren't expecting the first flight of the day with the plane sitting there to be delayed several hours but you just never know what strange thing may happen.

I feel the same way. Start it off nice and civilized. :)

Then again we did the overnight flight in March.

But for our next cruise it looks like we will be heading to San Juan with 5 days before our cruise. Talk about a buffer!

Ok ok so we loved what we saw of OSJ and want to explore (including the Arecibo observatory). And the flight costs as it gets closer to the cruise get much higher. If I'm going to pay that much I'd rather pay the hotel and see a new area! :)

WE have family friends did what you are thinking of doing....trust me it does not work ......no limo pickup at their house that morning, they missed their plane to MCO, and they missed their cruise that day.
With no travel insurance, they sued the Limo company.........it took them 2 years to recoup their money. My advise to you is be in the Port / Orlando area when the sun comes up on cruise day.
We have cruised 13 times with DCL, and always stayed at WDW or the Port the night before our cruise. And HAPPY Cruisin'...you guys will Love it.
