Last night during the opening ceremonies they were saying that Whistler and many of the Alpine events were about 2 hours away from the arena in Vancouver.

I live in the Tampa Bay Area, well, about an hour north of Tampa. Anyway in 2001 Tampa tried to make a bid for the 2012 Olympics. They were shut out, very early on mainly due to lack of transportation. Another factor, but not as severe, was a limited number of hotel rooms.

Once (if) this railroad happens, I wouldn't be surprised to see Tampa or Orlando try again. Between Tampa/Orlando, there are many sports venues already in place, Orlando has more hotel rooms than any other place I can think of.

Don't know if they would ever be selected (think humid, and rainy summer), but I bet they will try again.

As far as I know Tampa has not re-entered into any plans for the Olympics yet. It isn't typical to lose a bid and immediately turn around and re-enter for the next one.

What I've been seeing more and more of is cities in different locations considering making a joint bid - in some cases, cities in different countries, such as Montreal/Lake Placid in 2022, although this is currently against IOC rules. However, two cities in one country as far as I know is not banned, but the IOC far prefers the venues to be relatively "compact". Given the cost of staging the games, it seems the trend would require loosening of these restrictions so that costs can be shared.

Tampa/Orlando would be closer than Atlanta was from the Ocoee River, north of Chattanooga, where the white water events were held in 1996.

I say go you should for it. Never too early to plan ahead.;)

Well, they do make exceptions for some specialist facilities. There aren't too many ski jump facilities or whitewater runs in the middle of major cities (although didn't one city recently create a kayaking facility?)
