Start'n this thread for anyone who likes to fish and want to try fishing.

EVERYONE is welcome to add any of your fishing fun, tips, experiences, stories, PICS, fish tales, etc., or tell us about the one that got away (I got lots of them:lmao:

“Take me fishing. Because my wedding will be sooner than you think. Take me fishing. And show me that worms aren’t icky. Take me fishing. You can think about work later. Take me fishing. Because I get the giggles when the boat bounces. Take me fishing. Because my wedding will be sooner than you think.”

First things first, the actual fishing is a long distant second to the time we get with our kids. If you can keep this in mind the experience will be lifelong. This is not as easy as it sounds, I have found out. What they will remember is our fishing trips, they will remember beating dad, spending time on the water, enjoying nature and occasionally catching a fish.
What more could you want.

Through experience I have managed to make a lot of mistakes in how to take kids fishing, so learn from my mistakes and lesson the trauma on yourself. Believe you me this is an event that will be cherished forever, but it is not without pain…

- Do your research and find out the “hot bite” and “hot bait”. Don’t go fishing for trout in mid-summer and don’t even try to rely on those TV super baits. Worms are always a good reliable bait.

- Bring a camera (catch and release), extra clothes (think about it; kids + water = more clothes) snacks, and a cell phone if you have one. It is OK for them to call mom or a friend to brag.

- It may be easier with older kids to try night fishing. The bite is usually much better, and no need to wake them up at 0330 to catch the morning bite!

- Make sure you check their equipment and ensure that they have good line and sharp hooks. There isn’t much worse than missing fish after fish because of something that could have been prevented.

- THIS IS IMPORTANT ! Put a rubber band around your wrist to remind yourself this is a day of bonding and not fishing. Use the rubber band to snap your wrist when you forget this, then apologize.

- If you are fishing from a boat, limit the amount of gear up on the deck (number of rods, tackle, clothes, shoes, etc…). Most of this stuff does not float when accidentally kicked overboard when they try and see how far their head goes under water.

- Plan for the whole day. Don’t rush to get no where. Take the time enroute to the water to get hot chocolate and doughnuts. Take a break for McDonalds in the middle of the day (yes it does constitute a drive there and back). Take the scenic, less traveled route home if available and get take out to bring home so stories can be told to the whole family over dinner.

- If you can’t control yourself and have to fish, try and only bring one child per trip. Two or more kids under ten and the odds of your fishing helping the situation are dismal.

These are some things to take into consideration when taking kids fishing, whether they are yours or not. Best rule of thumb is to remember that it is a day together, enjoying each other’s company, not just a day of fishing. Never forget that our children are our most precious resource and what we do, or fail to do, will forever stay part of their lives. Help them learn how to make the environment a better place and at the same time you will be developing a life long relationship. Take advantage of every opportunity… because my wedding will be sooner than you think.

Fishing,,it does a body good.

Do Fish Fart ?

According to our ichthyologist at the University of Guam, fish flatulence per se has not been studied, although people have investigated fish digestion. They find that although most fish have alkaline intestinal environments like our own, coral-eating fish have acidic intestinal contents. The acid serves to dissolve coral skeletal material. Coral has the same composition as Tums . One product of the reaction between acid and calcium carbonate is carbon dioxide gas. Therefore, it is logical to assume that coral-eating fish fart a lot.
The other fish probably fart also, for the same reasons that we do.
However, Mike Pulte, a great fish enthusiast, said that he has never seen a fish do it.
I asked our ichthyologist if it were possible that fish gas would go into the swim bladder instead of out the anal opening. He said that modern fish have an air bladder that is independent of the gastrointestinal tract. The gas comes from enzymatic activity and not from the intestine. Older models of fish have their swim bladder connected to the gastrointestinal tract, but it is attached high up, closer to the mouth than to the other end, and these fish come to the surface and gulp air to fill the bladder. Therefore, we can assume that intestinal gas leaves the fish through the "rear" opening.

See there , this thread is educational too ! :lmao:

THE STORY: Frank and I had only been married a couple weeks when he thought we should go fishing. So we go to a local park beside a river, this is in MISSISSIPPI. There are some families fishing and some picnicing. He's catching some pan fish. I 'm catching a stick, an old shoe, then I catch a monster eel. Those things have huge teeth, so we decide it's better to cut the line. I go sit on a stump while he still fishes, 1/2 hour goes by and all of a sudden from my waist to my toes something starts biting me all over and I'm screaming in pain. Frank runs over and I'm covered in fire ants, had no choice but to drop my drawers immediately and brush the ants off me. I looked like I had freckles there were so many, I had little red bites all over my lower half. If I had been allergic I'm sure I would have died. So moral of the story, listen to the advice your mama gave you, always wear a good & clean pair of underpants when you go out in case of emergency.

I'm a huge fly fishing person and have in the 1990's caught some decent large mouth bass in the canals at FW. Below is a pic of one I caught just over the bridge going into the Golf Course, but they usually chased me off and could only fish for like 30min before getting ejected.

This was before the catch and release only and this made a great dinner the next day.

Very nice fish , Larry, :thumbsup2

Ever fish the Fla. Keys ?
Well here's another fish'n story.
We were there for a week, rented a Mako boat to fish from for the whole trip. It was loads of fun. Once we were anchored close to a bridge,,our son was set and just ready to swim off the back of the boat when Denise caught a shark ,,not sure if you'd call it a hammer head or a shovel head,,but it was a couple fet long, ruined swim time for son.
Another day we were out by the reef, anchored off,,beautiful hot sunny day, I'll guess we were in 25-35 feet a water, you could see the bottom clear as day. Denise felt something pick up her bait, so she set the hook and it just started to swim away,,not fast but at a nice slow pace. Now I want to tell you we were useing 30 lb. test line, salt water fish tend to stronger an we figured we could just muscle in the fish we'd catch. Anyways, this thing starts slowly peeling line off her reel at a nice steady pace when all of a sudden line goes limp, we figure it musta got free, she's reeling in the line when we realize the line is swimming back toward the boat. This thing swam straight directly under the boat and kept going. It was a mana-ray,,THE BIGGEST RAY I'd EVER SEEN that wasn't on TV !!! Near as we figured it was easily the size of a car hood, it was dark in color with big white spots.all over.
So Denise didn't have time to walk this thing around the boat, by the time she knew what was happening, once again it started peeling off line, cept now shes on one side of the boat, ray is on the other side and the pole looks like it's about to break and Denise is about to loose the pole. We open up the drag on the reel to release tention, I jump into the water, take the pole, swim under the boat an pass the pole to son & Denise. I'm back in the boat, now the ray is really moving,,Denise is gett'n low on line, we're trying to start the engine, son is pulling up anchor, suddenly the line knotts up in the reel !! Denise is hanging on for all she's worth, just get the boat in motion to run with the ray,,again the pole looks like it's gonna break, she's screaming, "I'M GONNA LOOSE THE POLE, I CAN'T HANG ON ANYMORE !", and at that exact moment that 30 lb test broke! It sounded like a shot when it broke !! MAN THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST FISH"N MOMENTS EVER !!

Yes Frank, I got to fish with a local guy today in SD. Fellow's name was Zane. Great Fly Fisher Peeeeeple with a super personality.

Just a footnote: How come all the guys out here in SD are named Zane or Cody ???????

Back on topic: Zane took me to a good lookin' stream. You could almost smell those trout a sizzlin' in the black cast iron fryin' pan.

"What fly Zane" ???? 'Use a #4 bead head Hares Ear with a #14 dropper Hares Ear' "GOT IT, ZANE". Watch out Ms. / Mr. Rainbow or Brown Trout.

Water movin' pretty good. Stream not wide, but should I use my wading staff ???

'Hey John, what are you doin' sittin' in the grass'----"Tryin' to dry out Zane".

Workin' upstream in that curent, 10 steps and YAHOOOOO here I go. Even in July, the SD water is a tad cold----Lucky I did not get hurt or lose any equipment.

I think, but not sure, Zane mumbled something about Easterners.

I stuck it out, dried out and released a couple of nice 'Bows & Brownies.
Thanks Zane, I had a great day and an excellent bath ! ! !

Man that sounds like "the life". Even the bath part sounds pretty good. ;)

John, I'm glad you didn't get hurt,,but it's those unintended mishaps that make those little side trips memorable, :thumbsup2

and I'll bet the swimmers gotta real kick outta you too !!:lmao:

:cloud9::cloud9::goodvibes:goodvibes:cloud9:

We have landed in Cody WY.

I am getting closer to a picture that I saw in Outdoor Life or Field & Stream when I was about 15 years old. It was a fellow sitting on a rock, looking through binoculars across a valley, wearing a Woolrich (From PA) Plaid Hunting Coat. Probably a 30-06 slung over his shoulder. He was in the Teton Moutains.

I will have my binocs, my woolrich coat is now my son's property, I will not be carrying an '06, it will be a flyrod.

I WILL FIND THAT ROCK, SIT ON IT AND LOOK ACROSS THAT VALLEY WITH MY BINOCULARS ! !

But for now this has to suffice. This AM I went to the WY Fish Commission, picked up my non-resident licence and the permit for my Jon Boat.

I asked the Fish Commission Rep where should I go ???? He pulled out a map ; go here, here, here, here. There were so many Xs on the map it was hard to read the road names & numbers.

Let's do the math. 72 minus 15 = 57 years. Watch out ROCK, here I come.
john----Yes, the fishin' license picture below is for real ! !

I love to fish, it's a hobby,,(uh,no wait, let me rephrase that) It's a way of life that can be done with the whole family, or just a friend, or alone.
It's always a challenge, it constantly a thinking game, and once you think you have the fish figured out,,they swim away,:lmao:

And did you know that lake fish make lousy pets? I once caught a beautiful 8 lb. bass at Bay Lake,,I named it Fred. I show'd Fred to everyone on the boat, even bragged about Fred to the others, I told Fred "Now I'm gonna put you back and I want you to stay right here in this area til I get back".
"Stay Fred, Stay", I said. Then I put him back.
Stupid fish,, I haven't caught or seen hide nor scale of him since.

Fish simply show no loyalty at all.

If the biggest bass in the world could talk, what survivor tales would she tell ?
:confused3

Fishing is guaranteed.
BUT the catching part of it is not. It's easy to get frustrated sometimes, then ya need to remember the expression "Never give up".
Catching fish is simply the awesome bonus you get from spending time out in the open air, being with family or friends, or enjoy'n some alone time.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I like to cover a lotta water when I fish, so I am constantly moving, on boat or on the shore. When I hit on something , I stop, fish it out then move on. You gotta remember, fish swim, so just because you do well in one spot, doesnt mean it'll be a good spot on your next visit.

So,,how many of you can say,
"I went fishing at Disney ?"
"I caught a fish at Disney ?"

There are so many opportunities to fish at Disney. You can bring your own fishing equipment,,at some places at Disney you can rent equipment, you can fish the shore of Bay Lake, ,,some resorts have ponds/lakes to fish,,2/3 resorts have fishing docks (Meadows Store & Riverside) We were even invited to fish river that surrounds Tom Sawyers Island once !
And then of course there are the kinda pricey, but loads of fun Guided Fishing Excursions on Bay Lake and DTD.

Life is short,,fish hard my friends !!

Knowing the ideal conditions and times to fish is helpful, but they aren't the most important consideration for fishing success. Still, knowing when conditions and times are poor for fishing can at least allow the fisherman to have realistic expectations. If they then exceed those expectations, they have had a great fishing day.

We are in TN. Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, the Classics.

NO ! ! ! I came here to steal Frank's Swimmers. Jon boat in the water, downriggers on the Jon, attaching Humminbird fishfinder to my trolling motor, J. Perry Priest Lake. This is where the biggins' live.

Got out my bigmouth spinnin' gear and my tackle box, full of crank baits, buzz baits, spinner baits, various plastic worms. Mr. Bass, you want it I got it.

A slight problem---the 6 tray tackle box went upside down in the 5r, opened up and a little mess happened. As I write, OUCH, OUCH, I am making headway untangling everything, very slowly. OUCH ! !

My favorite from our Spring trip to the Fort in 2012, not fish but fishing related:
