Read throught this link below, it will prep you on what to expect and what to plan for.

Hydroguy's Guide for DLR for WDW vets

There are tours. You may want to do the "Walk in Walt's Footsteps."

Indiana Jones ride!! My favorite, and not at WDW. And New Orleans Square- it's beautiful.

Not sure if it will be running when you go but do try to see Remember Dreams Come True Fireworks! Best fireworks show I've ever seen.

Slow down and take in the details of DL. Lots of nooks and crannies to see- nice quiet place to eat and watch the ducks is at Hungry Bear in Critter Country. Wander thru the shops in New Orleans Square. Take the back way from Frontierland to Fantasyland- very peaceful.

Also, if you get the chance to hop to DCA do it! I love going there- our favorite areas are the Grizzly River area, Bugsland, Condor Flats. Such great feels. Also my kids love doing the hands on things in the Animation Academy. You can't miss the Aladdin show either! Top notch and so funny!

the Aladdin show is being replaced and it was very fun to go see...

I don't believe Aladdin is being replaced. At one point it was stated that it would be but then it was just black for awhile and is now playing.

We just got back from our first trip to DL and like you we are frequent WDW visitors. So my recommendations are:

Tiki Room- the classic is much better than the Iago/Zazu mess at WDW
POC- a longer and much more detailed ride
BTMR- much more thrilling than the ride at MK
Space Mt.- liked it so much better than at WDW. It is a much smoother ride.

And at California Adventures

Tower of Terror- the ride tells the story better of the Tower Hotel
Screamin- a fun outdoor roller coaster
Monster Inc ride- a kiddie ride but worth seeing
Aladdin show- this was really entertaining

Have a great trip.

Early in the week(days), early in the day, stock up on Fastpasses. Matterhorn at night is a must!

I would say do the things at DL that they don't have at WDW such as Matterhorn, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (removed from WDW around 1998), Indiana Jones ... oh, and eat at Rancho del Zocalo, perhaps one of my favorite places at DL.

Generally, I/we like DL much better than DW. It's smaller, yes, but also more dense. There's more stuff there and it has more charm. As others have said (and will likely say again), it's also the original park -- the one that Walt built.

Have a great time!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions...helps tremendously!
