I'm a regular to WDW and know the ins and outs, but this will my first trip to Disneyland. We will be staying onsite at the Grand Californian through our DVC.

Any tips would be great. What are those things that I should definitely know...

I have a couple of specific questions:

1. The World of Color... I kind of understand about needing a FP. My question is really about the Dining Package. Do the dining package FPs give any special advantage?

2. Is the Carthay Circle restaurant worth the price for the dining combo?

3. Do the lines clear out at night on the rides?

4. What little things should I not miss, or make sure and show my group to "show off a little".

Thanks... I look forward to the responses.

Howdy bcrook! Nice to see you over here.

You are in for such a treat.

I'm sure the regulars will be along soon to fill in a lot of the details for you. We defected to the west in 2013 and returned again last year. We upgraded to AP's so we'll be heading back this year as well.

We got a WoC dining package this past trip because we wanted to do it on arrival day and knew FPs would be gone by the time we arrived. Generally they say to only do the meal if you would be eating there anyway. You'll need to line up early to get a rail spot either way. We chose CC. It was really pricey, but it was really good. I highly recommend the pork chop. Whether it's worth the price is pretty subjective, so I'll leave it for others.

When is your trip? That will affect park hours and whether you can expect lines to lighten up much at night.

Are you the sort to make early entry? We stayed onsite for just that reason. That first hour of the day is golden.

I've never done the Carthay Circle dinner package for World of Color, but I love Carthay Circle to have dinner! It's beautiful inside! The food in my opinion is really good. I always make a reservation to eat there. Those Cheddar Jalapeño biscuits are wonderful!! But that's just my opinion :-)

Hey mom2rtk! Thanks for starting this off. We can do either get up early or stay late or both. I prefer the LATE stays at WDW because of the heat and I generally go in the summer. This will be a mid June trip to DL. We'll have the hopper and we will be around for 8 days (although we don't plan on going into the parks everyday...I have a lot to see in Southern California).

I guess my WoC dining question was whether the Dining Package was significantly better for access to the WoC... it sounds like probably not. We may eat at the Carthay Circle anyway (I love the idea of eating there).

Good to know about the advantage of the first hour. Also looking forward to being able to simple ride Toy Story Mania without getting up at midnight a month or so in advance to get a FP.

My group is the regular WDW group, and we are very excited about this trip.

This is how little I know... I didn't realize that there was a Fantasmic! at Disneyland. I just thought there was World of Color at GCA. Mercy... This is going to be fun... it is going to be quite fresh for me.

For us the early morning was better because of the time change. I'm thinking you travel with teens though, so might decide you like later better. Our last 2 trips were in early December, so not very late hours anyway.

I'm sure you'll love returning to legacy FP. :)

I imagine you know this, but just in case..... you can only purchase up to a 5 day ticket without upgrading to an AP. Sounds like you plan to do other stuff in the area, so maybe not an issue for you anyway.

If you plan to eat at CC anyway, then I'd probably do the package. But take a look at the menu for both WoC and non-WoC dining to be sure you get what you want. I don't think the different sections for WoC are really worth it if you're just going for the FP.

My first suggestion on all of this would be to read through the first post on the different superthreads in this forum. There's one for Fantasmic and also one for WoC.

Not to worry. We'll walk you through it. :)

If you didn't realize they even had Fantasmic at DL, then you are in for quite a treat. It's a great show. It has recently undergone a lot of change in terms of how it operates though. Like WoC, you must have a FP ticket to enter the viewing area. You can get those at a kiosk in the morning, or you can do a dining package to get one.

Looks like it will fall to me to be the one mom2trk calls "the regulars".

Two standard starting points for folks like you. Both found in the Stickies.

2. Is the Carthay Circle restaurant worth the price for the dining combo?
Yes a special advantage, but not enough to make it worth dining there on its own. Bottom line is if you want to dine at CCR anyways, then go ahead and combine it with WOC. Otherwise, you can see WOC fine with no dining package.

This thread will explain it...

3. Do the lines clear out at night on the rides?
To some degree yes but it depends on what season you are there. The park hours at DLR tend to be a bit longer than the WDW parks. During high season DL (the park) is open 8AM-Midnight every day with an EMH there at 7AM three days a week.

Since you are planning for June (which will be high season) then educate yourself on June issues such as grad nights, AP blockouts and 60th anniversary impacts.

4. What little things should I not miss, or make sure and show my group to "show off a little".
The Newbies thread and DLR Guide thread at the top will get you 80-90% of the way to being a total show-off. :) Hanging around this forum for a few months will do the rest!

Ahhh, a little WDW ignorance or what some DLR vets will take for WDW arrogance? Fantasmic! started at DL in 1992. Then it came to WDW in 1996. And DL does it better I can assure you. Yes, it lacks a stadium. But the intimate setting at DL feels much better in your heart (but not your bottom)!

Thank you! I did read your stickie. Really enjoyed the history. I will read up on the rest. It is exciting to start from scratch. It helps that my traveling group is laid back. We wont feel like we have to do everything or stress out. But if there are tips for doing Radiator Springs the right way, Hidden Mickeys, Back Story, or good places for food and drink...we eat that stuff up. We simply have a great time no matter what. I can't wait to see the differences in the rides...like Pirates of the Caribbean and I guess Small World.

I appreciate your help.

Oh my, that Grad Night info is golden. That is something that I wouldn't want to be surprised by.

I am excited about the legacy Fastpass! Interesting that radiator springs if not connected to the system. That is good to know. Fantasmic sounds really cool in that setting.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I believe RSR is indeed connected now. WoC and Fantasmic are not connected though. Think of them more as an admission ticket dispensed by FP machines than actual FPs.

And you're going to love staying at the GC after you get drenched on the Grizzly River Run. You can change and be back in the park in 10 minutes if you have a good room location. :)

It doesn't surprise me that it is connected now. It was surprising to read. As for the drenching, that is SIGNIFICANTLY closer than Kidani to DAK. :laundy:

My Disneyland tips redux:

1. Which happens to be my all time favorite. Look before you sit down somewhere. Because if a seat is damp or wet, butt lol it hasn't been raining think about it!

2. Do not wear open toed shoes at all costs. My Aunt Gert did not heed my warning, and as a result now can get a discount on pedicures. Super scary man!
:faint: If anyone is interested in knowing those details, just let me know. All I will add however on that subject, is that it involved a stroller, an angry old man with a cane, hot weather, and a malfunctioning toy. Go figure man.

3. If the mac and cheese looks like a most remarkable shade of biohazard orange don't eat it. Your tummy will thank you! :)

4. Do not wear high heels. I saw a lady one time wearing such a shoe. And she ended up getting stuck on Main Street in the railway track.

5. Don't make your food server angry. Believe me.... Tip well. Very, very well.

6. Do not attempt to swim across ROA it won't work. Check out YouTube. :faint:

7. Do utilize fast passes and single rider lines.

8. Do not anger the Gods or Jose and his fine feathered friends, if you should happen to visit the Tiki Room, because well in the one case, one may end up a toadie. And in the other case, you better cover your hair. An umbrella might be good.

9. Use your MM or EMH if you can get your booty out of bed early enough. I normally cannot. Lol

10. Don't think you can hide out somewhere in the park and be there already in the morning. They will find you man! Again, I shall reference YouTube.

I have never eaten at CC, but I have dined at club 33 (same head chef, no?) and my opinion on high end park food (which may not be a popular one) is that it *is* "high end park food". After days of nachos, churros, pizza & dole whips, anything that doesn't seem like it's been sitting on a sterno flame for hours is absolutely delicious! Could you go into LA & find a meal twice as good at half the cost? Yeah, probably...but it is Disneyland, so embrace it!

I saw that HydroGuy pointed you to his information threads. Those are very helpful!

My two cents...
1. The World of Color... I kind of understand about needing a FP. My question is really about the Dining Package. Do the dining package FPs give any special advantage?
As others have said, you do need a FP for WoC, but I generally agree that unless you want to dine at the restaurant, it's not worth getting a dining package. To be honest, that is my advice for pretty much any dining package, be it in DLR or WDW.

It doesn't surprise me that it is connected now. It was surprising to read.
Yes, RSR was connected last summer. At this point, all of the attractions are connected to the other attractions in the same park (e.g., all DL attractions are connected to each other). The good news is that RSR FPs are now lasting longer into the day (in most cases), so it's not quite so hard to get one. I still recommend getting one within the first two hours of the day, but it does look like they're often lasting longer than that.

3. Do the lines clear out at night on the rides?
Yes and no...I do think there is a general drop in attendance towards the last hour or so of the park's day (when open late, not so much when the park closes at 8:00 pm or something like that). The headliner rides will probably still have a line, but some of the other attractions will be closer to walk-on.

4. What little things should I not miss, or make sure and show my group to "show off a little".
What kind of things are you looking for? Historic things to show or tell them about? Favorite or specialty treats? Attraction tidbits?

I've never done the Carthay Circle dinner package for fantasmic, but I love Carthay Circle to have dinner!
I'm thinking this is a typo, but there is no Fantasmic! dining package at Carthay Circle. Carthay Circle has a dining package for World of Color. There are dining packages for Fantasmic! now, but they're at restaurants inside DL.

I too am a WDW vet planning my first trip to DLR in July 2015 for the 60th :)

A few things I have been learning...

- There is a new process for Fantasmic in DLR where everyone must have a FP. I am seriously considering the Blue Bayou F! dining package because a) it is the only way to get a front and centre spot where you can actually stay seated on the ground throughout the whole show b)the menu appeals to us c)Blue bayou would be a fun place to eat. I think my strategy will be either to get a F! pkg on July 17 (60th anniversary) when most things will be crowded anyways or to book my F! pkg on the last day of my trip and try to watch it with a free FP first and see if we feel the dining pkg will be worth it.

- For World of Color the dining packages offer you an advantage, but you can get similar standing locations if you are willing to "work" for it with the free FPs. That said, it is extremely important to get a good spot for WoC as it is a spectacular show - but only from a good location. We won't be doing the dining package for this one but will make sure we do the research to get a good spot. .

- Table Service is not the same in DLR. e.g. Ohana is an absolute must-do for us at WDW. I will even pay OOP for it (and for this free dining thrifty soul, that says a lot). Most tell me that there isn't a comparable fan favorite like that in DLR. I do plan on several table service meals although we may explore more counter service meals to trim costs.

- Counter service is much better in general that at WDW. Maybe I can save money on food?

- Most rides at DLR are better than their WDW counterparts.

- Learn and understand about Magic Mornings and Early Entry. I admit I am still a little confused but I will have it figured out :)

- If you typically spend X days at WDW, you'll want to spend approximately half that at DLR to feel you have a comparable experience. We typically like 10-12 days at WDW so we are planning 5 park days at DLR.

- legacy FPs means plenty of re-rides on our favorites, something that was near impossible at WDW with FP+.

- Park hopping sounds like it will be amazing - just a 5 min stroll between parks :) Plus we are staying at the Fairfield Inn Anaheim so it should be super easy to pop back to the hotel for breaks. I am in alt just imagining that my hotel room might be almost as close as the walk to the Pop Century bus stop at Magic Kingdom!

- DLR tickets do have expiry dates. This surprised me as WDW tickets don't. My plans often change at the last minute so I am not as happy about this difference.

- they have an Earl of Sandwich in DtD at DLR too. Yayyyyy!!!

It depends on what you mean by "fan favorite." Most all of the DLR TS locations have someone on the Disboards that really likes them. I also like 'Ohana at WDW, but it seems to get mixed review here on the Disboards. I would say that the most commonly mentioned dining locations at DLR are Blue Bayou (for atmosphere), Big Thunder Ranch BBQ, and Cafe Orleans. All three seem fairly popular and well liked...

I don't know that I agree with this. Some of the attractions are better at DLR, some are better that WDW, and some are equally good at both parks.

- Learn and understand about Magic Mornings and Early Entry. I admit I am still a little confused but I will have it figured out
In practice, both Extra Magic Hour (EMH) and Magic Morning (MM) means the park opens one hour earlier to select guests. In DL, only TL and FL are open. In DCA, most of the big attractions are open (including Carsland and TSMM). On-site guests (staying at Paradise Pier, Disneyland Hotel, or Grand Californian) have access to EMH, which happens in DL (T, R, Sa) or DCA (Su, M, W, or F). Magic Mornings happens only in DL (T, R, or Sa) and is available for guests with certain types of tickets (usually 3 or more day PH). Disneyland.com has a pretty good thumb nail description of the two: https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/early-admission-options/

We are WDW vets too. We have been to DL in June 3 out of the last 4 years, and last year were there in July (due to DD's activity schedule). We found it very manageable in the summer, even in July which surprised me (of course with the 60th anniversary this summer- who knows). I strongly recommend park opening in the summer. We were really surprised at how empty the parks were for the first couple of hours-- they were much more empty than we have found the WDW parks at rope drop. I think a good part of this may be because of the large local crowd that has to drive in as opposed to WDW where a big chunk of people are already staying on property. We have been known to do marathon days at DL- we have gotten to the park at rope drop at 8:00 a.m. and left after 11:00 p.m.- and I will say that while the lines are less in the late evening than in the afternoon- I would not say that they were "cleared" out and they certainly were longer than the first couple of hours in the morning. Again, I think for the local crowd, it is easier to stay later once you are there, than to get there early.

We actually really like the WOC dining package. We don't mind being in the wet zone, and I feel like we do not have to line up quite as early as those with regular FP when we have the dining package. Seems to me that people with regular FP line up about an hour and a half ahead of time and the front of the area fills up really quickly. We usually get to the Dining pass area between 45 minutes to an hour before the show and after they have opened the area- we typically walk right in and go right down to a rail spot in the wet zone. I'm short, so I pick wet over not being able to see over the person in front of me, as everyone stands for the show. My tip if you want to do that is bring ponchos. Depending on which way the wind is blowing you can get damp, or you can get soaked.

We think Fantasmic at DL is far superior to WDW's version. DL has a Peter Pan pirate ship sequence that we love. We have not been there since it went all FP though, so I can't really give you tips on that one.

If you like shows, Aladdin is an absolute must see! Mickey's and the Magical Map is really cute.

Unlike WDW, you can still find some random characters and some wandering characters. If you like characters, I would recommend taking a peek around the Town Square area in the afternoons if you are in that direction. You never know who might pop up. We have found Cruella there a couple of trips, and the Queen of Hearts on another trip. We have seen Mulan just inside the gates. You just never know who might pop up.

Also, you really want park hoppers. By WDW standards, DL/CA is really just one big park. We go back and forth all day. The parks are separated by just a plaza and bag check is on the outside edges of the plaza so there is no bag check when hopping between parks. You can literally get from the back of one park to the back of the other in 10 minutes.

As far as other little things not to miss- one thing I would recommend is doing a round trip on the train. Unlike WDW, the DL train actually has tunnels that have scenes created just for the train trip. If you like the characters, the Mad Hatter and Alice usually come out around 2:30 at Coke Corner on main street and host a game of musical chairs. Sometimes Mary Poppins shows up too and I have heard of Peter Pan occasionally dropping by. You might check around your trip time to see if the time has changed and if they are still doing it, but I think it has been going on around that time every day for years.

You asked about RSR tips. At rope drop (assuming there are no early hours- or you can do it when the gate opens for early hours which is what we did), the wide right technique works. You do not want to enter from the GC entrance- you need to enter from the main entrance or you will be behind the crowd. As the CMs lead you down towards Carsland with the rope- stay as far to the right as you can get. Carsland is on the left, so everyone's natural inclination is to go the left side of the rope ( I had to about physically drag DH to the right with me because he thought I was crazy). When the CMs make the curve to Carsland, everyone on the left starts getting funneled into the right, so if you are in the front on the right side, you are at the head of the pack. If you do this during EMH/MM, know that RSR sometimes doesn't get going right at the start- some people recommend not using your EMH/MM for that, but it was a priority for us, and we were not sorry we did, even though we had to wait a bit for them to get the ride going. Also RSR has a single rider line. We used it a lot. Another tip is don't miss Carsland at night. It is beautiful and you can get some great photopass pics. Also be sure and enter Carsland from the Wharf at least once. The view is impressive- it looks real. The first time I did that it took my breath away.

So crazy excited about our first trip to DLR. Thanks OP for starting this thread - so many fantastic tips to learn from :)

I've heard great things about these places and am hoping to do some of them :)

Good to know the time differences between dining pkg and non-dining pkg :)

I just want to be sure to clarify that we get a front rail spot in the wet zone at that time. The spots at the rail in the dry zone or on the steps, will likely be gone by those who lined up ahead of them opening the area. Fine with us and we like the very front rail spot in the wet zone with no one in front of is, but for anyone that is adverse to wet, you might want to come a little earlier!
