Okay we just got back on Jan 31st and became members. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAN A TRIP. Well we have such busy schedules this summer (dd and I are going to Italy for 12 days with her school) and the boys are busy with baseball. So I don't want to wait til next Jan. and am considering Aug. 16th for 8 nights. Am I nuts to go in August for our very first DVC member experience. We are spoiled by going in less heated months like Nov.and Jan. We are still planning on going in Jan. for 5 or 6 nights. Any tips advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was there is August and it was miserable. It was so humid my glasses would fog up whenever I went from the Air Conditioning to the outdoors. I would wait until fall, winter, or spring.

August is HOT & HUMID.

If you go, don't plan to "commando" the parks. Go early, go back to the resort for a rest & swim, go back in the evenings.

Plan to spend a lot of time in the pool or the water parks. Don't do the DDP - who wants to eat all that food when it's hot, anyway?

August can still be lots of fun!

Oh no way we would do commando in that heat. I figure this would be a good time to try the Typhoon Lagoon. We have never done the water parks. Plus just hang out at the pools too. Thanks

We've gone in August due to family scheduling issues as well. I could not agree with CarolMN more. Forget commando touring. Go early, and come back by 1PM. The parks are open late so, go back at 5PM or so (after the 4PM rain- we had it 3 of 7 days). It will be crowded until the last week in August. Don't overexert yourselves.
Two other things- Italy (especiallly Rome) can be brutal in the summer as well; I think Disney is easier. Not alot of A/C in the Coloseum, forum, etc- it was tough in late July/early August except in the northern mountains (the Dolomites).
And as many members of these boards frequently point out, a week at WDW, regardless of the rain, temperature, etc. is still better than a week anywhere else.
Have fun.

I have gone in August many times and didn't mind the heat at all. The crowds were so low that you could see a lot more and still have time to do thw ater parks and spend time at the pool. Staying in DVC resorts are so relaxing, you will be happy to have a "home" to go to when you want to get out of the heat.

We are going to Italy the end of June til about July 9th. I am sure it will be hot and we were told that a lot of hotels over there don't have AC either. So that should be intersting.

I think if we go in August.....it will be more to enjoy THE OTHER THINGS AT DISNEY. When we usually go...we are so into the parks that we hardly ever venture off the beaten path so to speak. I am used to sitting for hours at baseball tournaments throughout the summer with my older son.....so I am sure we will survive. LOL

We have been in August twice. Is it hot....absolutely, but we have had great times. We have kids that are involved in travel sports thus early summer is never available.

As long as you understand it will be hot and the lines a litte long you will be fine. I agree with the others, we would go to the park in the morning and leave in early afternoon when the park is the busiest anyway and then go back at night. Also please remember that during August the parks are open later for those staying on property.

See same here......my son is on a travel team..they don't finish til about 3rd week in July. My dd won't finish her summer dance program til first week in Aug. then they start school the last week of Aug. So we were thinking going mid Aug. so we have a few days at home before school starts.

Because of sports schedules, our big family Disney trip is usually the end of July and more likely the beginning of August. It has been for years. Maybe we are used to the heat but we do not find it that bad. We get our share of heat waves here in the northeast. We do not do "commando" style touring. As stated earlier, get to the parks early and leave right after lunch for the heat of the day. Drink plenty of water and enjoy your pool! Typhoon Lagoon is great to cool off as well. The key is having a daily plan for park touring. The only thing I did not like about our trip last August was that it was during the first week of free dining and we found the crowds crazy. This year we will be mentally prepared for the crowds and will avoid all evening EMH at any cost!

Repeating the above.....

Go to the parks early

Leave by 11 am or noon

Enjoy the resort pool, take a nap

Go back to the parks in the evening and do non-ride stuff

Relax and pace yourself

Let me preface this by saying I hate heat and humidity! But we did August one year and honestly I was ok. I think 99% of it was being mentally prepared for what it would be like. I promised myself I would not say (out loud) "It's so hot." We always drank bottled water, wore hats, plenty of sunblock, and had those neck coolers and the kids had water misters with the fan on it. We also took the afternoon break every day. Prepare for it and you'll be fine.

Have you thought about going to Vero? That was the first DVC trip we took as a family because it was August and we thought that the parks would be too hot. We had a wonderful time!! The sand was hot but there was a constant breeze coming off the water and the ocean was just right. I am not really a beach vacation type person, but I thought it was a beautiful resort. Get a one bedroom and plan to cook a few meals in the room when you don't feel like going out for dinner. Have a great time!!

We are looking at Vero too. We would need a two bedroom place with three kids...two of which are teens.. I am not a huge beach person either but we went to Ft. Walton Beach last Aug. and stayed in a three bedroom condo and had the most relaxing time. I am thinking we will do more of that type vacationing in Aug. at WDW. We plan on going to WDW again in Jan. of 08 for 5 or 6 days like this year.....when we can do all of the parks in much better weather and with much lower crowds.

I see that you are from Maryland (me too). We have been to FL in June, July and Aug. before. It's summer. It's gonna be hot & humid here AND there! Summer in FL is really not all that diff. than summer in MD. If you wilt here then you'll wilt there. But you'll appreciate the attractions w/ A/C more and have more pool time.

We just bought at SSR in Dec. and are also planning to go on 8/16 (but to OKW) when the pts. drop. Going Thurs to Thurs & it gets us back the week before school starts. We're planning to also take Fri. off so we'll have 3 days at home when we return.

This scenario saves us 25 pts. & we figure summer in FL is a crap shoot so why not (we want to bank as many as possible for a cruise for next yr.). We will also buy an AP and this gives us more options for using it next summer since we just need to be sure to go at least one week earlier.

WOW interesting that you too are planning for the same time!! Can I ask why you are not staying at SSR? Right now I have booked BWV for our first three nights and SSR the other 5 nights. We sort of want to try Beach Club too....but the only thing they are offering are Friday/Sat. where at least we can get a Thursday to go with at BWV. We wanted to do 4 and 4. Just curious as to why you are trying OKW first? :goodvibes

We always go mid to late August & it is my favorite time. The crowds aren't bad at all, because the Floridians are heading back to school, you only need to pack for hot weather & most parks are open late. In fact I do the opposite of what a lot of people say. We sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, go swimming & hit the parks late afternoon & usually stay late into the evening when it cools down. We've been at Christmas a few times & you have to pack for warm & cold weather. We froze in MK this past December during the MVMCP! It was in the low 40's & windy & even though we were wearing sweatshirts, fleeze jackets & gloves, my DS was begging to leave. We prefer the hot weather a lot more! :thumbsup2

We're just being stingy with our new found points!! We only bought 250 & these dates in a studio at OKW will only use 98 pts. so we can bank 152. This will give us 402 for next yr. We want to do a Land & Sea Combo next summer & are planning to spend 3 n. at SSR then do a 4 n. cruise. We'll probably have to pay cash on the cruise for our DS but everything else would be covered with pts. Well, actually, we may use all of the pts. on the cruise & pay cash with the DVC discount for the 3 n. at SSR. STILL waiting on the 2008 cruise point charts to be released to decide for sure which way we'll go!!

Anyway, waiting to go on Aug. 16 & switching to OKW saved 25 pts. VS staying at SSR earlier in the summer!
