We've decided to venture over to Universal for the first time in June, spending 2 days of our already booked DVC stay. I've confirmed that it's cheaper to book a throw away night on property in order to get the benefits of the unlimited express pass & early hour. But it makes me nervous and I'd appreciate details about how it actually works.

1) Can we receive the tickets prior to arrival, and can we do the early morning hour on the first day?
2) Do we need to "check in" at the hotel at any point or do we just let the room remain empty?
3) Is day 2 affected if we don't check in?
4) Anything I haven't thought of?

Thank you so much!

1) yes you can buy tickets in advance. I always get mine from Undercover Tourist and get physical tickets mailed to me.
2) yes absolutely you need to check in, as you will be given room keys for everyone that you need to present for early entry and they are also your express pass.
3)see #2 . You have to check in for day 1

Just get to the hotel very early as you will have to check in. I never physically checked out so there is no need for that.

You will be able to utilize the additional morning hour with your room key on either day.

You may want to bring swim suits / snacks. Those resorts are very close to the park and using the room for a midday break would not be a bad option.

The first morning you’ll go to the hotel and check in, everyone gets a hotel key that is used as your EE and EP. You can also park your car at the hotel and walk/take a 10 minute boat ride to the parks. The check in process is usually very quick.

You don’t have to ever step foot in the room, BUT I’d second taking swimsuits and maybe just a quick change of clothes just in case. The hotels are right there by the parks so there isnt the elaborate travel time as with WDW. If we were doing EE I’d much rather sleep a little later, roll out of bed, stash the small suitcase in the car and go right to the parks instead of taking the time to travel from WDW to UO.

Others have covered the logistics. I just wanted to chime in that you should bring an overnight bag and enjoy the hotel! Why not? The hotels are great. You can enjoy a late dinner at CityWalk, a dip in the pool, some relaxation then walk up ready to roll right over to the park again in the AM.
