First Timer with a few questions.... Need Help!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to Disney from May 23rd - May 30th, I should have checked about it being during an American holiday Weekend but oh well! lol! Is it really that much busier than normal? I'm travelling with my husband, 2 dd's aged 9 & 6 and my ds aged 2, should I avoid the parks that the ug site says to or does it really matter?
What is fast pass and how does it work?
Is it feesible to do a park a day and see and do pretty much all that it offers for our kids age groups?
I'm soooo excited, but I hate crowds and can't believe I was such a cracker for not realizing the Memorial day weekend was during our holidays!! eekk!
I want it to be perfect, we have kept it a total surprise and cant wait to let the cat out of the bag!!

Any holiday time will be very busy at WDW.
Memorial Day kicks off the "Summer vacation season" and the parks will be BUSY.

You can avoid any park that any guide says to.
But ALL parks will be busy during a holiday time.

People try to see and do "everything" in a park in a day's time.
During the summer, it will be HOT, HUMID and crowded. You will wait in longer lines, that's just a fact.

FastPass (FP) is available to all guests at NO EXTRA CHARGE... its FREE.
FPs are only available on certain popular rides.
The FP distribution, for each ride that offers it, will be near the front of each of those rides (there's not a "central FP machine").
You can only get "one FP at a time" (generally) but the FP will LIST when you will be able to get the NEXT FP for the same attraction or a different FP attraction.
Its easy to use:
You put your entry ticket(s) into a FP machine, which spits out a FP (one per ticket) and returns your entry ticket(s) to you.
The FP will LIST a time-period for you to RETURN (in an hour or so) to that ride, and the pass allows you to stand in a special FP line to ride an attraction with much less line-waiting (maybe 10-15 minutes) with FP compared to, say, an hour in the regular standby line.

Don't attempt to "do EVERYTHING" in one day at each park.
That can wear you down too quickly under the pressure.

PLAN your day (use those "guides" if you need to).

WDW can be GREAT, even if its busy, if you KNOW what to expect and how to "operate" in it.

Rule one:
ARRIVE EARLY... well before (say, 30 minutes before) a park is scheduled to open. You'll be amoung the first to get to start riding, and before any long lines can even form. (Gates will likely open early and you'll be allowed in for the "rope-drop" ceremony that opens the park.)
You can then get more "done" in the first 2 hours (before more "sleepy-headed" guests finally arrive) than at any other time of the day.

Lastly... its DISNEY... you will have a WONDERFUL time! :thumbsup2

How long are you planning to stay?

And yes, it's going to be crowded, and its going to be hot, but it wont be the end of the world. It's totally possible to see all the "good stuff" in a park in a day. My best advice is to get a Disney Guide (like the Unofficial Guide, which you probably all ready have) and make a list of attractions that you just cant miss. Then do those first. Use fast passes when ever possible and just expect to wait in long lines (especially in Magic Kingdom). If you are stayin in a resort, take advantage of EMH when ever you can. But just remember to take it easy and dont wear yourself out on your vacation.

I am arriving a few days after you, and staying a few days after you leave. We've been before during this time, but also during BUSIER times (Easter and Christmas week). This is one of our favorite times to go, because: parks are open longer, weather is great for swimming, there are more times for the shows and there are more characters, and there's generally an afternoon rain shower, which seems to clear the park temporarily and cool things down.

We get up early and get there ASAP. We sometimes go to the early entry park (EMH) in the morning, but leave by 11 at the latest if we do that. We have never done an EMH evening, but are trying just one this year. From all accounts, it's really crowded. We always leave parks by 1, and return between 3-6. We use the afternoon hours to nap or swim, or just hang out at the hotel. That's the MOST crowded time. We may go back to the same park or to another, as we always buy park hoppers. That way, if a park does seem just too crowded, when we go to another, it's almost always better.

We do use fast pass for ALL big attractions. Even if we get in early, we still get a fast pass for later because our kids always want to ride more than once.

We do not stand in line for characters, except at Camp Minnie-Mickey(shaded) in AK or the lines in Toon Town Hall of Fame (airconditioned) in MK, near closing time. Otherwise, we do character meals..........knocks out the "big ones" while eating, and giving us an airconditioned break at the same time..........3 birds with one stone! That way, we don't have to stand around in lines in the sun! You can get Chip,Dale, Minnie, Mickey, Pluto, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Mulan, Jasmine, Cinderella and her mice, Aurora, Snow White, Fairy Godmother, Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet, Stitch, Lilo, Jojo, Goliath, and little Einsteins all at character meals. We will go to some of the out of the way character spots that don't have lines, and we use our little trick at Animation Courtyard to see the newest characters, of bypassing the whole spiel and drawing at the Magic of Disney's Animation, going in through the gallery and getting right in line for those guys (also airconditioned).

I'm going to go on and post this, and then I'll post another with my kids' fave attractions (the idea of picking those you must not miss is a good one, and I've traveled with boys of your kids' ages!).

Okay, my family's faves (to help with your choices):

In MK: Splash Mountain is great! Also, Buzz Lightyear is a big family favorite. Mickey's Philharmagic, Dumbo, Peter Pan (magical), and Winnie the Pooh can not be missed in any trip for us. Haunted Mansion is great, my 2 year old was scared, though, and I had to sing jingle bells throughout and cover his eyes..........(he'll be turning 4 this trip and tells me I won't have to do this again....he remembers the last trip, despite SOME people thinking little ones don't remember). Space Mountain is great for the older set, and little ones like Country Bear Jamboree, so we'd usually split with one parent taking the younger to Country Bears and one the older to Space. We like to eat at Cinderella's Castle here for late breakfast (must have priority seating, and if you want it, you'd better call first thing tomorrow, as it's a bit late to get it), or Pecos Bill's for early lunch........on the back side of Pecos Bill's there are a couple of outdoor tables and across from them a McDonald's fries kiosk.......kids liked the familiar taste. We like Crystal Palace for dinner with Pooh and friends. Pirates of the Caribbean will be closed when you are there, and there are lots of other great attractions, but these are the ones we HAVE to do...................along with the fireworks show at closing, and both parades are great, too.

In Epcot: Anybody big enough will like Test Track, we haven't seen it yet, but Soarin' is apparently a great one, and we will be sure to do it. The Living Seas is fun for the kids if you aren't going to Sea World.........even if you are, stop in for Turtle Talk with Crush..........the kids loved it. We also like Ellen's Energy Adventure, but it's really LONG, but there is a part when you go for a ride and there are dinosaurs that my boys really love. Spaceship Earth is also a must do. Honey I Shrunk the Audience is hilarious.

In the World Showcase, my kids enjoy the gift shops in each country, and the characters. If you'll check the times guide, it will list when and where to find characters here, and there are rarely lines for them, and you can find ones you won't find elsewhere. Particularly my kids love to meet The Beast (from Beauty and) in France. There are two boat rides in Mexico and Norway that my kids enjoy, and they love the indoor Mexican pavilion. Norway's Restaurant Akershus has the Princess Storybook meals with Mulan, Jasmine, Aurora, Snow White and I think I'm leaving someone out. Le Cellier in the Canadian pavilion is a popular favorite on the boards for dinner, and we also like Coral Reef Restaurant near the Living Seas. You eat near a giant fish tank. Many don't like it though, so you'll have to decide on that one..........I think generally those who are used to just caught fish on the coasts don't like it...........we aren't used to that, and it tastes great to us. Illuminations here is the big show at or near closing, and you shouldn't miss it, though the fireworks get REALLY LOUD and scared our infant son, but he was fine at 2.

At AK: This is our favorite park after MK. My kids love animals, and they love this park. Dinoland is one of their favorites. It has some carnival-type rides they enjoy, but it has a little path garden with statues of dinosaurs they can climb on, and a giant dino excavation-type playground that they LOVE. Dinosaur, the big ride, is just down a bit, but we don't recommend it for those under 6........it's REALLY scary. My kids loved Kali River Rapids and the nearby trails with tigers, bats and komodo dragons. The also loved the safari, and the educational exhibits nearby, and the animals there. My kids love the Pocahontas show, though some on the boards don't. The whole family MUST see Festival of the Lion King. It is excellent, with puppets, fire dancers, singing and dancing.........really nice. Camp Minnie Mickey is one of the nicest places for character greeting in the World in my opinion, and generally we've dined with two trails,a nd just go to the third. Going up to Conservation Station on the train can be fun, but isn't a must do. There's a new big roller coaster here called Expedition Everest, but I'd bet all your kids are too small for it. Donald's Restaurantosaurus has characters here for breakfast..................and you can get Happy Meals in this park if your kids love McDonald's like mine. We also like to eat at Flame Tree Barbecue. We don't take a noon rest on our AK day, as we can do all we want by 3 o'clock or so, and then we will go back to hotel and out again about 6 to another park (usually Epcot).

At MGM:
My older son has loved Tower of Terror and Rock N Roller Coaster since he's been old enough to ride them. We plan to see the Narnia exhibit if it's still up.........it's just a walk through. Younger son loves (and older did when he was young) Playhouse Disney. We all love Voyage of the Little Mermaid, and meeting the newest characters at Disney's Animation. We enjoy Indiana Jones, but we have boys of course.........and we do want to see the new Motor Stunt show. Both kids like Star Tours. We have not yet seen Beauty and the Beast show, but it gets accolades on here, so we are making sure we see it this trip. We love Fantasmic at closing. Hollywood and Vine has a new character breakfast with little Einsteins, Jojo and Goliath here. The kids adore the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground, and it's great for photo ops. We generally eat lunch at Pizza Planet. My kids don't like the Muppet show, but love the Millionaire one.........go figure. We also like The Great Movie Ride here.

Well, I don't know if all that will help, but it was fun for me!
