We are going to universal orlando August 26th-31st. We are staying at dockside endless summer. We have 3 day park to park tickets with one day epic universes. We do not have the express pass. Do we need it? I was told end of August will be slow and we are visiting the parks. Tuesday-Friday. Can we still have a great vacation? I really don't want to spend the extra on upgrading hotels if it's not necessary. Please help.

I think you'll be fine. There's going to be a lot of people who are there for Epic and ignoring the other 2 parks. The FL crowd is back in school by the second week in August. You shouldn't need express passes. If Hagrid's line is super long, I suggest planning to get in line right before closing on the first night that you're there (assuming park hoppers). Riding at night is great and the line moves pretty quickly at closing. The only caveat is that if you have one park per day tickets, there is a risk that Hagrid's could break down or they close the line a bit early if you wait until close. Also, Hogwart's Express is not worth the wait if there is a long line (usually mid-day). Same goes for the Griffendorf (or whatever it's called). The line usually moves more slowly than the posted time. You can walk to the other park faster.

You can also sometimes find a short Hagrids line in the early afternoon (lunch time & such). Unless you are near the front of early entry, avoid getting in the Hagrids line in the morning as that is generally the longest wait of the day. Early entry can be a great time for short waits on not-Hagrids.

The last few hours before park close will have shorter waits on most rides. Take a break mid-day (go back to the hotel, or just a leisurely meal in AC and/or a few shows) to be able to take advantage of those last few hours. The buses are very efficient if you do decide to go back to the hotel. It's much nicer than pushing through the afternoon heat/crowds but then petering out a few hours before close & missing the nice short evening waits.

Pretty likely that Thurs & Fri will be the start of HHN. Expect Studios to close early (5pm) but Islands to stay open a little later. There can be short waits 3-5pm in Studios but some walkways may start to be detoured around HHN holding areas. The Hogwarts Express line becomes crazy long in the afternoon.

If they're doing a Hogwarts light show when you're there, don't fight the crowds to see the first showing or two. The later showings are MUCH less crowded and they normally keep going right until or past closing.

The Bourne Stuntacular is not to be missed, plus it's a nice long AC break. The Horror Makeup show is also good - witty, sit down, and AC.

Depending on the ages of your travel party, single rider lines can be very effective although you miss any pre shows. Except for Rip Ride Rocket which has a very slow single rider line, and Velocicoaster which also can be slow, the rest are pretty efficient.

The Universal App is great for showing wait times and show times, and the map, mobile order, etc.

Jurassic Park River Adventure will get you wet but very rarely soaked. The other 2 water rides, Popeyes Barges & Dudley Dooright flume, WILL get you thoroughly soaked. They are a lot of fun as long as you are prepared for a drenching.

Since you're staying on site I'd say you don't really need Express Passes as long as you take advantage of Early Park Admission. I'm usually able to knock out Hagrid's and VelociCoaster in that first hour and then the rest of the rides will have pretty short wait times for the next hour or two, so you can knock out a lot in like 2-3 hours first thing. I've stayed at Dockside at least 5 times over the past few years (at various different times throughout the year) and I've never felt the need to buy Express Pass, but of course your mileage may vary. :-)

Do you think moving it to the week before will help with the crowds. I didn't realize this week goes into labor day weekend.

The week before would avoid the start of HHN if Universal keeps to the HHN schedule of the past few years.

But then again, more people will be out of school the earlier you get into August. I'm inclined to think that's a fair tradeoff and a week earlier would be somewhat less busy. My go-to method is to look at the prices Universal is charging for tickets, EP, & hotels. Higher prices = higher expected attendance.
