First time to universal...need help please

We are going to universal for the first time this august/11- 3 kids 14,13,11
Thinking of staying at hard rock
Not sure of the tickets To buy- would 2 day park tix be good enough or 2 day park to park tix necesary ? Is 1 day tix good enough
We are going to Disney and then universal before doing the 3 day cruise and I am trying to keep costs as low as I can within reason.
Opinions on how much time is needed to see everything is welcomed...

One day per park should be adequate if you'll be onsite. Just get up early and tour wisely. Whether to be able to go park to park is more a matter of personal taste. If you like the hoppers at WDW, you'll probably prefer park to park at Universal.

Thanks. I think we might get 2 day passes w/out the park to park. I think it's a savings of $85 for the 5 of us.
After reading how popular the Harry potter ride is, I guess we should do that first thing in the morning.
