does anyone have suggestions of "affordable" hotels closer to universal. My plan is to stay onsite at Disney for 5 nights and then spend our last two nights closer to Universal for our first trip seeing all things Harry Potter and Marvel (second DW trip)! :) I guess this would entail getting a rental car for those two universal days. Does anyone have experience having a rental car dropped off to you? There are so many moving parts to all this-- I'm trying to figure out the most affordable, convienient way! Any advice or insight would be very much appreciated!

For the times we do a split stay with Universal we always stay onsite for the Unlimited Express Pass [this does not include any of the Harry Potter attractions]. This is a pricey option - but well worth it in my opinion. Also, Universal has built a new "value" hotel called Cabana Bay that is getting rave reviews. It is reasonably priced, offers early entry to the Parks, but not Unlimited Express Pass. Of course, there are many reasonably priced options for hotels close to Universal, but I personally am a huge fan of staying onsite to skip the lines.

The Hyatt Place across from Universal is pretty nice and they have a free deluxe continental breakfast too.

We stayed at double tree across from Universal(walked across the street but we did have a car.)

Thanks for the suggestions. Being within walking distance sounds nice. I will also have to look into staying at universal onsite. However, the price will probably be too much to add to an already expensive disney vacation!
