This is our third DCL tip, but first time doing the longer 7 day one. Had some questions if anyone can lend a hand:

1) What is the difference in the Formal Night (2nd night) and a semi-formal night (which I can't find anything on);

2) Is Formal truly formal (black tie or just suit and tie)

I only ask, because dont know if I need to bring two suits, a tux and a suit, etc? Sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but couldn't find a previous thread post/sorta-COVID.

Formal is only what you want to make it. It's totally optional. So you will find people all decked out and then some still in cruise casual. If you want to do a tux on formal night and a suit on semi formal you'll look great. Or just wear the suit on both nights. :)

For Disney (where the dress code is mostly optional) the 1 suit will be fine for both. We go with the general rule that formal is dressier than semi formal--but I think DH just wore a sport coat both nights with nice pants and a button down shirt. The girls and I wore the fancier dresses formal night and regular dresses on semi formal. Rest of the nights we were in jeans/tees for our Alaskan and Baltic sea cruises.

My DH wears a sports coat, collar shirt, bolo tie, and slacks for formal night and dumps the jacket for semi. I have the same little black dress (LBD) I wore on the last 10 cruises.
If you like your tux, then go for it!!! A smartly dressed gentleman and lady are always a pleasure to see. The difference between formal and semi are as much as you want to make them. Don't overpack!

Formal night has a Captain's reception in the main lobby before each dinner seating. FREE DRINKS. Bar staff bring around a tray of drinks...One red wine, one white wine, a non-alcoholic drink, two mixed drinks and a beer (I think). You can have as many as you want and you can go before both seatings for a double happy hour!

This is all very helpful. I have a tux that I love to wear, I just dont get many occasions to use it LOL. So any excuse to wear is fine by me! Thank you for the advice!

I don't know that they've been doing this since COVID. The officers have not been out as much to protect them from exposure.

They've stopped doing this since covid. We didn't have it on our 7 night on the Fantasy earlier this month. Don't know if they've started it back up yet. I also noticed, at least on our cruise, most people were not dress up on either formal or semi formal night. We've done 8 cruises, all 7 nights, and usually you'd see a lot of each--casual, church clothes, and formal clothes. On this past cruise it was almost all casual on both formal and semi formal nights.

Just sending this to the top. Anyone know if they are doing Captain’s reception again. Last post on this was April. Thanks guys in advance!

We had free drinks in the atrium also on the fantasy 6/11 sailing on formal night too. If you are doing the picture package the characters are dressed in their fancy outfits for both formal and semi formal nights m.
