I have been to WDW a million times, we did the cruise, and now we are tackling Disneyland. Dor some reason planning this trip seems overwhelming to me! When we go to WDW we fly out of Philly right to Orlando, take magical express to our onsite hotel and we do the dining plan.

Everything at Disneyland seems more complex. Which airport? Disney Hotel or Disney Neighbor? There are two parks but There isn't a monorail between them so how do I get there? Is there a dining plan? What about drink mugs? What about pins? HELP!

That is slightly overstating my panic on this but only a little. Any help? Any guides? Any Xanax?

DL is much much smaller and easier to navigate than WDW.
1. Fly in/out of SNA or LGB if you can. Smaller and closer airports than LAX. Use Uber/Lyft to get to the Resort Area
2. If your budget can afford GCH/DL Resort, stay there, otherwise, look into some of the Good Neighbor Hotels/Motels across the street on Harbor or on Katella. These are walkable and cheaper. We usually book with points in one of the Marriott or SPG chains and/or Best Western or Tropicana.
3. The two parks are separated by a plaza. It takes about 3 min to walk across. Both parks are fairly compact. For example, you can walk from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland in a matter of minutes but you will traverse the parks over and over so wear good shoes.
4. No free dining plan. Food is pricy and not as good as WDW both inside and outside the parks. We make reservations for table service dinners and use quick service/snacking for lunch. Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle are probably the 2 best inside the parks. We also like Wine Country Trattoria. I think DCA restaurants are better than DL ones..plus they have wine/beer :)
5. Pin trading is a thing and you can pick pins up at many stores. You can also get the free anniversary/birthday pins at stores and ticket booth.
6. Popcorn buckets are the big thing at DL/DCA instead of refillable drink mugs.
7. Buy your tickets/parkhoppers at lmtclub for discounts and then take advantage of MaxPass when you get to the parks

You are going to have a great time so don't really worry about anything. If you have done WDW, DL will be a piece of cake.

Get park hopper tickets & MaxPass. We really valued the immersion of staying onsite & the daily EMH helped a lot, but onsite stays there are very expensive. The Orange County airport is ideal, but if much better/cheaper flights are available via LAX, that is okay, too.

Don’t stress! DL is WAY less stressful than WDW. You will have a great time no matter what, even better with a small amount of planning (nothing like what’s required of WDW!). The parks are steps away from each other. We often hop back and forth multiple times in one day.

I disagree with the PP who said that the food at DL is not as good as WDW. I know WDW is supposed to have more and better table service options. I wouldn’t know since I didn’t plan my visit 6+ months out and hence was unable to secure any TS ADRs.... which is crazy to me! However, the counter service food options at DL are fantastic. There are lots of great options in both parks and they are much better that the CS options I saw at WDW.

I agree DL does have good food options as well. WDW just has a lot of themed restaurants which DL doesn't have and you don't need to plan as much at DL. WDW you have to make ADR's 6 months out at DL its not like this at all.

For hotels you can stay offsite as it costs less and hotels are much closer to the park many are within walking distance or a 10 minute shuttle ride away. I use getawaytoday.com a lot as they have deals with 3rd and 4th night free deals. Also many offsite hotels have free breakfast which saves money so, I would also look for this as well.

Edited to add SNA and LGB are the closest airports. With LAX you will have to deal with a lot of LA traffic so, please do keep that in mind when selecting your airport.

OMG, don't stress! Disneyland is seriously sooooooo easy :)

No matter what airport you fly to you can get a shuttle directly to your hotel. It is super easy.

Disneyland hotels are great, but pricey (no value resorts). We have never stayed in one. We just can't justify the cost. The Good Neighbour Hotels are fantastic, and many are closer to the main gates of Disneyland than the Disneyland Hotels.

You get to the two separate parks by walking across a 200 ft esplanade. Not kidding. A family of six could probably hold hands in a chain and touch both the Disneyland gates and the California Adventure park gates at the same time. lol. I kid, but only a little bit. No monorail or bus required.

As far as food, I guess it depends on what you like? I have heard the CS is better at Disneyland, and TS is better at Disney World. We never have trouble finding something to eat. There is no meal plan, like you said, so I find, for a family of 4 (Two adults/two kids) I budget for between $35-50 for a lunch at a Counter Service place, and the same for dinner if I'm cheap, but if we are feeling fancy between $50-100.

We eat breakfast in the hotel room, so between lunch, dinner and snacks I budget $150 - $200 / day.

Yes, this! Dining is way less stressful at DL than WDW, and we liked CS more than TS. We did a last minute trip over Easter last year, and still were able to eat at the most popular restaurants.
DL and DCA area is so much more compact than WDW. And it really does require much less planning than WDW. We stayed across the street on Katella and were a 5-10 minute walk to DL gates.
One thing we liked is that there are a lot more rides with single rider lines. That helped cut down the wait times, especially since we went over a holiday/spring break.

Thank you everyone!!! All of this information is so helpful!!!!

WDW vets that also love DLR here. Don't stress!!! One of the things we love about DLR is that it is so much easier and flexible than WDW. Get a park hopper. As far as getting from one park to the other, they are separated by a plaza about the size of a football field. It is closer than most walks from where the bus drops you off to the gate at WDW. You don't have to go through security between parks either. By WDW standards it is like one big park- we hop back and forth every day- sometimes multiple times. Pin trading is the same. We actually prefer it at DLR. SNA is closer (about a 15 minute drive) and easier because it is smaller, but some people use LAX because they can get direct or cheaper flights. There is no dining plan like WDW has. Dining Reservations book 60 days in advance. CS is far superior to WDW. You will be fine!!!

I want to chime in just to say that I also think the food at DLR is good. But it all depends on what your tastes are. I have never eaten at Cathay or the other upscale restaurants because the food sounds gross to me, stuff that I have never even heard of. Give me a nice bowl of Gumbo Ya Ya at Brennan's or fried chicken at Plaza Inn any day. And then there are the corn dogs.

I remember planning our first DLR trip :scared: I was freaking out. We were (are?) WDW vets and the lack of planning made DLR seem super stressful, like I was forgetting something.

No need to worry. It is super easy, everything about it (to us anyway) is so much easier than WDW.

Like others mentioned, if you can get a good flight into SNA do so. It is about 15-20 minutes from the parks, small and easy to navigate. We stay on S. Harbor. The Desert Inn & Suites is our go-to since it is clean, cheap and across the street from the entrance to DLR. Our first trip we stayed at the HoJo and really liked it.

I disagree with the pp who said the food us not as good as in WDW. Not as good as Epcot, but I like the food at DLR better than the other parks (although I really like Flame Tree BBQ at AK).

Most folks both DLR and WDW oriented tend to agree that DLR has better counter service food.

As far as table service, most (including me) lean towards WDW has having better food and certainly far more options.

Obviously, when folks talk about food, YMMV. :)

The food is unequivocally better at DLR. Absolutely no contest. I have been on no less than 30 WDW trips and just made my 395th entry into Disneyland yesterday.

There is no category where WDW food outshines DL food, right down to the Churros.

Wow! My # visits cannot compare to yours!

Since I despise churros I have no response to that comparison. But I would enjoy debating the other points further. :)

At WDW I have never done the dining plan. Or a character meal. FWIW.

But I would say:

o WDW has DLR beat hands down as far as creatively themed dining. Be Our Guest and Sci-Fi Dine-In come to mind first. Very creative and detailed.

o WDW wins on ethnic options - Boma's and Sanaa, many of the Epcot World Showcase restaurants among them. I have not had a chance to dine at Tiffin's yet at AK. Yak and Yeti I have dined at a few times. Just nothing like any of that at DLR. Most are pretty good quality and some are really good.

o I love Italian food and WDW has way too many options now - but DLR has basically zero aside from Via Napoli's in DTD. At WDW I do like Mama Melrose's a lot.

o I think Shula's at the Dolphin has The Best Steak Anywhere Anytime. Only thing at DLR that comes remotely close IMO is Steakhouse 55. I have dined at DLR Napa Rose once. Never at Vic and Alberts at GF at WDW.

o Dinner shows - I have only done HDD and it is hokey but DLR has nothing

o Options - you just have so many freaking choices at WDW. Many are pretty good. Some are really good.

Shula's (and the Swan & Dolphin for that matter) is not Disney, Yak & Yeti (which I really like) is Landry's but it is in the parks so I guess it counts ;). As far as TS, it really is not much of a competition since Epcot blows everything else away, and you are talking about 4 parks and 13 hotels with TS options. Sci-Fi is one of my favorites for the theming - but the food is pretty average. Mama Melrose has always been hit or miss (do not even consider Tony's at MK, DLR is better off with no Italian options if it means it would get a Tony's). Boma's is pretty awesome, as is watching the MK fireworks while having dinner at California Grill, HDDR is hokey but so fun (done it twice), 'Ohana has the best pot stickers, Tonga Toast at Kona (and Capt Cook's) is amazing and should be brought over to Tangaroa Terrace. The luau is not bad, HDDR has a better show but the luau has better food. You are not missing much on the character meal front, other than eating inside the castle - that is pretty special to do at least once.

The churro thing is real - the ones in DLR are better!

Well, it's not really fair to compare DL to WDW options that don't even exist at DL. We all know WDW has MORE restaurants, more variety, etc. But, if you take every restaurant at DL, you can match it to a comparable one at WDW, and when you compare JUST the quality of the food, DLR wins.

First and most obviously, DLs Counter Service options FAR surpass WDWs and many of DLs options rival TS restaurants at WDW. Simple comparison, DLs Plaza Inn Fried Chicken plate is heads and shoulders above ANY fried chicken plate at WDW, and at $17, a much better value. And it's CS! Places like Rancho del Zocalo serve up Mexican platters that are much better than any of WDWs Mexican TS restaurants as well. I had a half chicken platter with refried beans and rice, with corn tortillas and a side of fresh chips and salsa yesterday for $16. It was better than anything I've had at San Angel In or Hacienda de San Angel in Epcot and cost half the price. Lots of DL CS use real plates and silverware as well. CS that directly compare to WDW TS include the following: French Market, Rancho del Zocalo, Plaza Inn, Flo's V8 Cafe (arguably one of the best themed CS I've ever been to), Cucina Cucamonga, Paradise Garden Grill, and Lucky Fortune Cookery.

Naples is better than Via Napoli and Tutto Gusto. Wine Country Trattoria is FAR better than Tony's Town Square and Mama Melrose. It's not even close. But Italian food isn't as popular in southern California as it is on the East coast. I'd rather have ONE good Italian place at DLR than 15 mediocre ones at WDW.

As for themed restaurants? I agree BOG is spectacular. However, Blue Bayou is fantastic as far as theme goes (the food, eh). I do think DL does a better job themeing their CS locations. Red Rose Tavern is great. Flo's V8 Cafe is amazing. French Market has live musicians performimg jazz music most of the time on a stage, and there is often a live Mariachi group performing near Cucina Cucamonga at DCA. Smokejumpers Grill has great themeing. Hungry Bear is fun. The Pizza Port has cool retro themeing and will soon get a Pizza Planet overlay, you can watch the Jedi Training show while eating at Galactic Grill. I can go on. The food at every character meal at DLR far surpasses the food at WDWs. Plus, the character interaction is also better.

As for ethnic options, you are right that DL doesn't have anything. BUT, the surrounding local area has PLENTY to offer that is much better than WDWs Americanized theme park versions of ethnic food. There's a huge diverse population here, with a ton of Mexican, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian and South American representation. My city is predominantly different types of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Indian cuisine. Real authentic (scary things I would never eat type authentic). You can easily Uber or drive to any type of ethnic place you can imagine.

Napa Rose is home to the best steak I've had anywhere. We tend to measure "Disney" steaks up against Morton's and Ruth's Chris. NR beats both in terms of flavor and creativity. CA Grill has a good steak, but it's not as good as NR. I have heard great things about Shula's, but technically that's a chain restaurant. You can also walk to a Ruth's Chris from Disneyland if you are looking for a high quality steakhouse steak.

I have not had dinner at Steakhouse 55 yet, but the breakfast is out of this world good. I would say the CA Grill Brunch matches it in terms of quality, and that's it. They have a dish that is "French toast" but it's a literal cube of brioche bread, hollowed out, made into French toast and then filled with what tastes like creme brulee, fresh macerated mixed berries, and topped with FRESH vanilla whipped cream. It is the single best breakfast food item I've ever eaten in my life. Served with house made pork sausage and real maple syrup.

Dinner shows...ok, WDW wins that one. I can't stand dinner shows though. I hate eating in a loud environment and so do my kids. So, that's not even something we pay any attention to.

I have eaten almost everywhere at DL and have made quite a dent in WDW as well. We are taking a 10 day WDW trip in July and I've only made 4 ADRs: Homecoming, Bluezoo, Wave (lunch on our resort switch day) and Garden Grill Breakfast for my son's birthday (who LOVES Chip, Dale, and Pluto). That's all I am motivated to make. Nothing else is a "must do." We might end up at more TS if we can snag same day reservations but I just don't care where we end up eating over there.

I visited Disneyland and California Adventure parks this past November and was also a bit overwhelmed before the trip at the lack of planning that I would normally do for WDW. However, I absolutely LOVED the compact size of the parks, the history of everything in DL and felt like most of the rides were better (especially Pirates and Haunted Mansion). I did download the park app and purchased the MaxPass, which was helpful. However, there are less photopass locations than at WDW - something I found unique. And not every ride has FP available. Don't sweat it, just enjoy the free spirit of the parks and go with the flow! I only had FP's for 2 rides and stood in standby for all others and the longest wait I had was 60 minutes - that was on a Sunday, the first weekend of Christmas celebration and in the afternoon.
