First night show (or the lack thereof)

My daughter was on the Disney Wonder in Alaska this summer and was surprised to find that there was no show in the main theater on the first night of the cruise.

Is this just when the Wonder is in Alaska or is this the case on all Wonder cruises?
Also, is this only on the Wonder, or also on other DCL ships?

Since we did have an opening night show on the Disney Wish, maybe this is something that's happening on longer cruises?
Or is it just in Alaska?

Inquiring minds want to know.

before posting this, i searched and saw many references to this being the case on the Wonder at least in Alaska, which is why i decided to post.
I'm curious as to whether this is an Alaska only thing.
My daughter felt it was a real downgrade to the experience not meeting the cruise director on the first night of the cruise.

she also didn't like the fact that there was no "until we meet again" on the last night, but the absence of that might have been covid related.
But not having a welcome aboard show isn't covid related. What's the reason for it and is it only on the Wonder and only in alaska?

yes, my daughter and son in law thought it was very strange.
She felt it altered the whole experience of the cruise. Made it far more impersonal, at least on the first 2 days of the cruise.

Our June Fantasy had a movie we'd already seen as the first night entertainment, so we skipped it. The crew introductions seemed to take place on night 2. I understand why you're upset. Our first cruise was Wonder Alaska (2016) and we had a first night show (basically showcasing the upcoming entertainment.). Our second cruise (2018 Magic Baltic Sea) was the year DCL was doing the same show 2 nts in a row, so we didn't go to a show on night 1 and it felt strange... especially as night 2 had the crew introductions.

we've been cruising on DCL since 2002 (when my daughter was 17), so we're pretty familiar with what they usually do.
That's why my daughter was so surprised when there was no welcome aboard show on the first night of her alaska cruise.

We were on the first Alaskan Cruise this season and it did not have a show on the first night. I was actually really good with that as it gave us more of a chance to settle in the explore some of the ship. And the first night is usually our go to Palo Dinner night.

First night should be the cast of dancers, singers and welcome aboard show. Strange... must have been missing staff or some issue that forced them to cancel.

I haven’t seen that for years - first night on the Magic this cruise was a magician. On the Fantasy in June it was a ventriloquist.

I’d actually be okay without a first night show as it always feels like I just got my luggage and now I’m rushing to the show!

Unlike the poster above, our Magic cruise in June did not have a first night show on an 8 night sailing.

Sounds odd, but I preferred it. I liked not having to decide between missing something or just settling in and enjoying the first night relaxing on the ship.

On the WBPC in March on the Wonder, there was no evening show on the first night either. And it did feel a little odd!

We sailed on the Wonder end of July and correct, no show the first night. While it felt a little odd, it didn't detract from our cruising experience in any way.

The 11 night Iceland cruise on the magic last month had a comedy/string quartet group on the first night. It was strange not to have “let the magic begin” or similar.

How that you mention it, I wish I’d put that on the comment card. I much preferred the first night show on our previous cruises.

I wish we didn't have a show on our first night because we were sitting in the show when we started to move so we missed the horn (no sail away before hand because it was raining).

9n Greek Isles June 18 and 11n Iceland in August, both on the Magic didn't have anything the first night...

A real mix. It was really rocky on the sea day. Temps ok as long as it’s not windy! Alesund was nice and warm, Nordfjordeid was warm in sun but cool in shade. Today in Eidfjord it has been cool all day.

I’ve been in the hot tub a few times, people have been in the pools.

Amazing cruise, it’s my favorite now after Alaska. However for me my best port so far has been Eidfjord and there is no way the Dream can visit there - we had to go under a bridge and the Magic only just fit.
