Hello!
Just a booked a week at the Poly next year. Plan to fly in the day before and stay at a less expensive WDW resort that one night before transferring to Poly (are surprising our kids with the Poly). How does this work? Do I link that one night reservation to MDE or is that necessary? Also will we still get DME on arrival?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, link to MDE for fast passes and dining. Yes, you do get DME if staying in a less expensive WDW resort. ALL WDW resort hotels have DME.

Enjoy!

I do this every time I go solo, don't fly but they are all on MDE. Disney will transfer your luggage from resort 1 to Poly. Not sure who you call at value's but it's bell services at the other resorts. They will arrive at Poly around 3 or 4 and be held at bell services there until you are in your room. You just call down and they bring them up. You will need to check out of resort 1 and into Poly but you can check in any time, doesn't matter if your room is ready or not. I drive so I just drive over to resort 2, go ahead and check in sometime as early as 7:30 or 8. If I'm valet parking my car I just give my bags to bell services, go check in and go about my day at whatever park I'm going to that day. They will text you when the room is ready but you don't have to go back to the resort at that time, just when you are ready go to your room.

Yes - you will need DME from the airport to the first night hotel not to the Poly! I find it best to call and make the "split DME reservation direclty" one way to the first night hotel and return trip from the Poly to the airport. You will probably get two sets of the DME package in the mail as well, one with luggage tags for the trip to Disney and one without for the trip back. (I just got mine for an October 8th split trip!)

Then after your first night head off to the parks (or wherever!) and give your bags to bell services to transfer to the Polynesian... spend your day at the parks, dtd or whatever your plans are and then take the family to the Polynesian to check in. Your bags could take a while but I have had excellent service during many split stays and my bags have always arrived by 3/4pm.
