If you watch the trailer, it's really not that weird. Mr. Hanks really seems to capture Walt's enthusiasm and his cadence and really does a remarkable job, even just in the short clips you hear in the trailer. Overall, if the movie is half as good as the trailer (which I have watched over a dozen times now) then it will be awesome and Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson will deserve their Academy Awards (because if this movie isn't Oscar bait, nothing is.)
