First ever trip report--How I fell in love w/ the Fort--NEW STUFF

Ok, I thought of another Fort Fuzzy---you know what I mean---that warm feeling you get when you think of special moments at the Fort??? Well, here's an account of one of my first Fort Fuzzies:
At check-in the CM told us they had forgotten some of our keycards and asked if we could come back before 10pm to get them. No problem, we replied. Well after setting up quickly (as described before) and after going to the pool and hot tub, we returned back to the camper and changed clothes/ gathered our s'mores stuff, etc. Me and DS7 volunteered to catch a bus to the front and get our cards, then meet DH and DD at campfire. Now, I am NOT good with directions. At A-L-L. My DH knows this and described the best route for us to get to the nearest bus station. And so away we went on foot to find a bus. We came out of the 700 loop and took a left. I didn't remember exactly what my hubby had said, but hey---I can catch a bus. Or so I thought. We turned right by the 400 loop and just kept walking and walking. We waited for 10 minutes or so at the bus stop near the 500 loop, then decided---hey, this walkin' thing is not so bad let's keep going. :cool1:
Well by the time we were approaching the bus stop at the 1400 loop, we were over the whole "walking" thing. There was a bus approaching at the same time as us. I felt sure she was coming to personally pick us up. We were mere steps away---she stopped for a second or so---we began running and waving our arms and watched in disbelief as she just drove on by. It's ok, I tell my son---we'll catch the next one. Well, the thing is---there is no next one at that point. We walked all the way around and when we got the front of the loop we asked someone in a golf tournament for directions to the front. Well, apparently, though we were still full of Disney wonder and I had used the "let's pretend we're from the olden days before cars" routine with my son---we were looking a little weary and weathered. I say this because after continuing our journey to the front and getting our cards, we walked out the Reception Outpost and, lo & behold, there were our kind golf cart ladies who had given us directions. She said, "hun, I just couldn't bear the thought of you having to walk all the way back from wherever you came from." Now, how stinkin' sweet is that???? We explained that, yes, we had bikes and also a golf cart scheduled for delivery in the morning---but simply got a little turned around and missed every single bus!

Here's another couple pics from our trip....

Sometimes you just have to take the time to have a drink, smell the roses, paint a picture....:) A very good natured artist let me pose in his seat and wear his hat. Don't you wish ppl everywhere were as happy as the ppl at Disney????

And...don't you LOVE when you see this:
100_2924.jpg

Because it means---YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE ENVELOPED BY THE HAPPINESS OF THE FORT!!!

Ya, right, dream on.

We were mere steps away---she stopped for a second or so---we began running and waving our arms and watched in disbelief as she just drove on by.
I love when that happens. People running, waving, banging on the side of the bus, sorry, timing is everything.
Seriously though, if you were behind the bus, it's difficult to see anything. If you were in front of the bus, once we pull away from a loading zone we're not allowed to stop, even if it's just a few feet. I break that rule all the time though. Hmmmm, maybe that's why I never work at the Fort. I'm gonna get fired one of these days.

:rotfl2:
Yes, I'm sure everyone ON the bus got a chuckle out of seeing us crazy people trying to catch the bus! Heck, I'm sure the people at their campsites had a good laugh too. I laughed at us several times thinking of it---and my hubby---well, I wasn't going to tell him that part, but my DS gave him an earful!!! :rotfl:

Loving the TR! We are taking our kids for their first visit to the Fort next June. We haven't been there since 1997! It looks to me like my kids are about the same age as yours (DS9, DD7), so it makes me even more excited to see their trip through your eyes!

Great trip report!

But... I gotta admit... you've never owned a camper before, and you jumped right into a 5th wheel? Way to go!

I am sure they are going to have a BLAST! My kids are 7 and 5 in the pics and it was so cool for them to see all of the wildlife and still be so close to the parks. We didn't get to do the hayride at night, but they really wanted to, so that's a must-do for next year! Definitely make time to watch the night water parade and fireworks from the beach & get there early b/c the beach chairs go fast!!!! :thumbsup2

Ok, I don't know how to do the mutiple quote replies- so let me start by saying thank you to Polkadot! DD will LOVE hearing that ppl think she looks like a princess!!!

And MadFF---yes, we jumped right, straight into the 5th wheel. :woohoo: The hubby knew there was NO way I'd go for tent camping. I admire everybody who enjoys that, but I want/ need hard walls to protect me from all the creepy crawlers, bears and boogey men! I am also a huge fan of modern conveniences and so A/C, microwave, stove, and an indoor bathroom appeal to me in every sense of the word!

I have 4 older sisters (12, 11, 10, 8 years older than me) and so I watched them go from pop-up to TT to 5th wheel to MH and back to 5th wheel. I felt like a 5th wheel would be safest for us to pull and my big sisters told me brands that I might want to consider. After a lot of research, I found our Cardinal in TX and we negotiated by phone, then made the drive to see it, then went back and picked it up! That was August of last year and we haven't missed a beat since! We bought RV passes for every LSU homegame this year and we'll def be having a blast with that. Our quiet generator comes in today, as a matter of fact. Best price around----Honda eu6500 for $3500, no tax and free shipping!!!! Best price I could find locally was $3600 plus tax. Wanagenerator.com if anyone's interested. :dance3:

Love the painting picture, great idea, and what a nice guy to swap places with you for a minute.

Again love the TR, its fun to see what we have to look forward to.

Cooperprincesses, you MUST do a TR after your visit. I can't wait to hear all about it.

The painting picture is one of my favorites and he was the sweetest man! I didn't even ask to do it; we just started chatting and I told him I had just done a Painting w/ a Twist party (where everyone brings a bottle of wine and you all paint the same picture under the direction of an artist on stage). I told him I was feeling like a budding artist and---before I knew it, he'd hopped up and handed me his paint brush and hat and offered me his seat. :yay:

I'm in popcorn::. Great pics, especially the kids playing on the beach with the fireworks. Glad you're hooked, there's no place like the Fort!

As for falling in love with the Fort...DH & I are DVC members. We have stayed in all of the DVC resorts and love them all. A couple of years ago I got a really good deal at the Cabins for 4 nights in mid December. We decided to go and see the Christmas Decorations! Well....This year we are celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary. So I asked my DH, "Where would you like to go to celebrate?" Now it's our second marriage (best thing I've ever done in my life was to marry this man!!) and we don't have any cash flow issues, so I gave him choices...Bermuda? Hawaii? So he says, "You may think I'm crazy, but I'd LOVE to go to the Fort & stay in a cabin for the week - Oh, and we NEED a golf cart!" :rotfl2: Hahaha...So, thanks to DIS Boards, I called Kenny early on August 1st and reserved a cart. Then waited for an AP discount :surfweb:('cause we are not used to having to pay for our accomodations) and booked our Wilderness Cabin!

Thanks to everyone for giving me all of the info that I will need to totally enjoy our vacation at the Fort!!:thumbsup2

Thanks, TOGA! Here's another favorite pic from that trip.

I find the look on my son's face hilarious, as if he's about to run into a dinosaur. Then there's the look on my daughter's face, like "get real" this is so fake and I am soooo over it.

Sweet stuff, Deemarch! You and your sweet hubby are going to have a wonderful trip! I hope we can make it to Disney in early 2012 while the Christmas decorations are still up, but the crowds have wound down! We'll probably miss a lot of the magic at the Fort though. Stinks that we have to visit around the kids school schedule!!!!

Don't forget to write a trip report after you return! I'll be looking for it!:)

:yay: Awesome TR!!!!! I don't know how I missed it up to this point, but I am now all caught up. Read it through in one sitting. Trust me when I say..I was NOT bored to tears. In fact I could feel your excitement through the computer screen.:cheer2:

I like your BIG pics.

Fort Fuzzy!? :lmao: DH and I will be borrowing that one. Love it!

Missing the buses just made for an extra adventure and a great story. :thumbsup2 ...and it was very nice of the GC lady to lend a hand, or rather four wheels and a seat for your trip back.

I sincerely have enjoyed every word. If there's any more....please share. :goodvibes

:yay:Kampfirekim, thank you soooo much! I take that as a big compliment coming from you, bc I LOVE reading your stuff! Just noticed our kids are the same age too! :yay:

As a matter of fact, I LOVE reading each and every post on this forum! My husband has been picking on me because I've been obsessed with this site ever since I found it. He's on a true campout tonight (in a tent w/o electricity) with my son for cubsouts. My daughter is sleeping w/ me tonight and she rolled over just now and said, "Mom, are you on that Disney website AGAIN???" C'mon, family----give me a break! :rotfl:

DD wants a princess on here too, so here goes...princess:

Awwww....thanks Bourquefam. DH found your TR first and LOVED it, but since he mostly lurks i don't think he made a comment. He said that your TR reminded him of mine. So, since you liked mine, consider that another compliment. ;)

I completely understand about loving every post. DH introduced me to the Disboards and now says he's created a monster. :rotfl: DS7 often exclaims proudly.."My mom is a DisBoarder!!!" :lmao:

My DS7 just joined cubscouts last week. We're very excited for him. :thumbsup2

Hi neighbor!

We're planning on driving part way next month. Do you mind telling me where you stopped? Right now I'm thinking about the KOA in Chattahoochee just west of Tallahassee but not sure.

The kids don't look excited at all ;)

Jennifer

We've done overnighters at the the KOA in Chattahoochee and Monticello. Both were fine for what we were looking for...just a spot to pull up, hook up, and pull out. Not a problem if you arrive late at night because they leave a paper outside with your campsite and you don't have to "check out" the next morning. The one in Monticello was a little farther but it's nice to be just that much closer to Disney the next morning. And I think the one Monticello has free waffles in the morning!

Brobrosmom, that's exactly the info. I was looking for! Thanks! :yay:

The more driving we get done on the first day/ night, the better. We were originally talking about leaving on Friday after the kids get out of school (early dismissal at 1:30pm) and having them miss the last day, Monday. Now we're thinking---let's just miss the last 2 days and leave on Thursday evening like we did last time. I think we could get 6 hours in---is that enought time to make it to Chattahoochee??? We'll pack sandwiches and snacks and only stop for quick gas/ restroom breaks.
