First airline to go maskless (Jet2 - a UK airline), Now British Airways and Virgin Atlantic

I'm really hoping the mandate goes away on US airlines before our big summer trip, only because I have a very hard time sleeping with a mask on and we've got an 8 hour overnight flight during which I'd really like to get enough sleep to arrive in Paris semi-rested and ready for fun. I wasn't even thinking about masks when I booked our flights, just about maximizing our vacation time and getting a head start on adjusting to the time change, but it is going to be rough if I am masked and sleepless all the way across the Atlantic!

We flew home to the UK from Florida in January, and obviously had to wear masks. As always, it was a night flight. I'll be honest and say wearing a mask to sleep in was not great at all. When I woke up my nose felt all stuffed up, and my throat felt dryer than normal. And its not like I sleep properly on a plane - more like half a cat nap with one eye semi open!

Really hoping masks ( and testing to get into the US from the UK) are dropped sooner than later

For us here in the Netherlands it's about the cases in hospitals and deaths and not infections in general anymore. We have a relatively high vaccination/booster rate, and now that omnicron is relatively non-lethal we are getting closer to the group immunity we need.
But it's also about the support base. After two years of measures, most people are done. It gets harder and harder to explain why measures are needed.

I wouldn't be too worried about your trip. Only if a new variant pops up that is more lethal.
It’s a problem as long as a negative COVID test is required to get back into the US! I’m not worried about lethal, I’m worried about being stuck in isolation for a week In an airport hotel. Someone just posted on another thread today they got back from the UK and her DH tested positive as soon as he got home.

our flight to Heathrow is a daytime flight and I will be wearing my mask I think.

Apparently the WH has just had a press briefing and has said there are "no plans to change international travel requirements at this point"

I wonder if that means the mask mandate will be extended, as compared to other countries, it isn't really "living with covid" imo.

Well the mask mandate is over and it looks they may not even bother challenging the court ruling. All of the US major airlines are now announcing that masks are optional, effective immediately, at US airports, domestic flights and most international flights.

Hawaiian Airlines is keeping the mask mandate for now.....we have an 11 hour flight to Honolulu soon and I am not looking forward to wearing it that long.

I just read the following have dropped mask mandates:
MORE DROP MASKS: The airlines joining in dropping their mask mandate grows - now Alaska Airlines, American, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, Jet Blue, Southwest, Spirit, United don't require face coverings.

Yes, they updated their mask policy. When I posted that they said they would still require them. I had a feeling they would drop it as it would be even harder to enforce when other airlines had dropped it.

How about at the airport terminals? I'm just wondering as we fly out on April 30th from Detroit.

Crazy...in our area there are 3 main airports.....Newark (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK).

Two of the three still require a mask in the airport LGA and JFK. EWR does not require a mask anymore as it is in NJ and not in NY.

Confusing times.

If the ruling ends up being challenged there will be even more confusion, anger, fights, arrests, etc.

It’s been announced that masks are optional but who’s making the decision?
