Hi All,

Will the fireworks be too loud or scary for an 8-month old baby? Should we bring baby ear muffs or covers (the kind people put on their babies for concerts, etc.)?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

that depends on how close
if your in the back it probley wont be bad

The first year we went, my niece was 8 months old, and my daughter was almost 2. The 8 month old was just fine, but the almost-2 year old did not like the noise at all. I think it is hard to say, and probably just depends on the kiddo. We have always gone in the winter, so the kids have hooded sweatshirts and hats covering their ears. Maybe that helped the baby that first year.

The fireworks seem louder depending on where you are watching them. We were in our hotel room across the street, and it sounded like they were being launched from our hotel's parking lot. It was sooooo loud. But watching them from Main Street (best view, in my opinion....because you can see the castle) they seemed so much quieter. Maybe because you hear the music, and its easier to ignore the launch sounds.

If you watch from Main Street, you can always duck into a nearby shop if the baby gets scared....

Have a great trip!

Bring ear plugs or muffs. You got nothing to do lose by doing so.

Ear muffs are a baby's best friend at DL, everything is quite loud and little ears are sensitive. Remember their ears are shaped different then ours and can damage easier, once they are damaged, they are for life. I am, however, a self prooclaimed over protective mom.

I suggest covers as ear plugs can be a choking hazzard and can damage ears if put in wrong. Thats what my DS's ENT told us. They have a nice pair of peltor youth on amazon.com for $14. They fit a baby through small adult great! They come in pink and blue. I just bought our 2nd pair for our youngest DS7mo for our trip next week.

how do you get your baby to keep them on his head? i can't imagine my 9 month old dd being willing to have them on her head for more than a second!

DS was only 2 months old for our town's July 4th celebrations, which are pretty dang loud. But I had him in my sling so one side of his head was up against my chest, and the other side I put my hand over his ear area. He was fine.

So if you wear your 8 month old like that, you've got a built in muffler of the sling and your body.

Other than that, earmuffs (not plugs for a baby). And be in a place where someone can leave with baby easily, or at least get into a building/bathroom/somewhere away, if baby freaks out.

My son actually loves the earmuffs, he keeps them on and sometimes cries when I take them off. It's a totally new sensation and he seems to like it. He has yet to try and take them off himself and he's a little over 7 months and very active.

My son was 8 months and slept through the fireworks. I think it just depends on how sensitive they are.

My niece was almost 9 months old in December when we had a big family trip. We watched the fireworks from near the Partners Statue and she absolutely loved them, laughing and clapping the entire time with no extra sound buffers.

Afraid or not - protect their ears! We bought "Pelton" ear protectors made specifically for children. They are from England. I would need to look up purchase info but if you need more because a google search comes up dry - write me. We use them in all loud situations including if we are mowing the lawn.

I first saw them on a very famous baby in a People magazine photo at the cash register - Apple Martin. (Chris Martin and Gweneth Paltrow's baby at a rock concert). I had been looking for such a thing in the U.S. and came up empty.

Thanks for the tip, I found a place in Canada (I'm from Calgary) that sells them!

We went with my 3 month old daughter. We were sitting at the entrance to Thunder Mountain RR when the fireworks started. They definitely scared her but I just put her ear against my chest and covered the other ear with my hand and she was fine.

When we went with my then 15 month old neither he nor his brother (4 yo) had an issue with the noise and we sat right in the hub by the castle. My 15 mo even slept through part of them one night!

It depends on the child. Some younger kids are not scared at all, while others can find the loud noises frightening. I would say bring ear muffs just in case. Better safe than sorry! :thumbsup2
