20+ years ago I worked for the Forest Service in fire, and in California, there are multiple correctional facilities that have conservation crews that participate in search and rescue and wildland fire. It’s a good position to have. When I first trained in search and rescue, we trained at the prison with some of the inmates. I was 19 at the time, and this was my first experience working with that population. Our facilitators, who were inmates, were great and shielded myself and the other female my age from some of the rude individuals across the fence. These crews work hard, and I do think they should earn more than they do. The individuals that we trained with said that this was a desirable position to have.
