Well I went from having no swelling at all to swelled fingers overnight basically. Nothing horrible, but my rings were feeling tight. So I went to take them off this morning (I never take off my engagement or wedding band) and couldn't get them off. After much work, a lot of hand lotion, and pain, we were able to get the engagement ring off, but not my wedding band. Now my ring finger is puffed up to twice it's normal size from the trauma of it all.....

Does anyone know of any tips/techniques to try and get off my wedding band? It is really starting to hurt.....

Try dishwashing liquid. Dilute it in some water. Also, my fingers seem to be smaller when they are cold, so maybe some ice would help with the swelling.

When I got toward the middle of my PG, I had to take my rings off at night because of the morning swelling. I still take them off at night, much to DH's chagrin.

Ice your hand, see if the swelling goes down. Try liquid dish soap.

There is someway of winding a thread around your finger but I don't know it.

Last resort, go to a jeweler and have it cut off. My mom had to do that once.

Try holding your hand in ice water to make the swelling go down.

I hate to say this, but I had to have mine cut off at a jewelry store. Hopefully it won't come to that for you.

Try elevating your hand over your head for a while, more than just a couple of minutes.

Mine got soo tight--I had to ice my finger (not the hand---totally just the finger) for 10 minutes (get it very very very very cold and numb--I even may have done so for 20 minutes, don't remember).

Then after icing--slathered with lotion..and I would be lying if I said the ring came "right" off. It still needed encouragement.

If you are unable to get it off--you will have to have it cut off :(

Take your hand to a jewelry store.

Take the wide dental floss (like Glide) and begin winding it around your finger -start as close to the ring as possible. You'll see that you can begin to slide the ring forward as the floss compresses your skin. You can also put a drop of lotion on the floss. Inch your ring forward, winding the string ahead of it. As the ring moves forward past the thread, loosen the thread behind the ring so you don't cut your circulation off for any longer than necessary. Good luck! Hope this helps! Let us know when you got it off.

I had surgery last summer and had my wedding and engagement rings cut off before the surgery. They always got tight during humid weather, and I couldn't remove them on my own. My rings were uncomfortable, and I probably would have had them cut even if it wasn't for surgery requirements.

After my surgery (and a trip to Disney!), I had my rings resized and they look like they are brand new.

If you do decide to get your ring cut off, go to a good jeweler. Wait until after you have the baby and then go back to get the ring resized. That way, you should get a good fit. Make sure all of the swelling is gone before resizing.

If your finger is hurting, you'll probably be glad in the long run if you do get the ring cut off. It shouldn't be *that* tight. I'd be worried about increased swelling as your pregnancy progresses. It will feel better if the ring is cut. And, if your experience is anything like mine, the ring will look brand new when it is resized! You can't even tell it was cut!

All the best to you.

::yes::
This method works really well; a friend helped me get a ring off this way once. It's one of the "magic tricks" that ER people know.
Here's another explanation of how to do it (more explanations are often helpful):
Removing a Ring or Wedding Band

As those of us who wear jewelry know, it's not unusual for a ring to get temporarily stuck on a finger. Fingers naturally swell, especially when it's hot and humid outside, or if you walk with your hands swinging at your sides. Usually, if you simply cool off and elevate the affected hand above your heart for a while, the swelling will go down and the ring will come off easily. Applying ice to your finger can also reduce swelling quickly. If that doesn't work, try using cooking oil or soap and water to make your finger slippery enough for the ring to slide off. Use a twisting or "unscrewing" motion to remove the ring, rather than pulling it straight off over the knuckle

However, some situations can cause a ring to get badly stuck. For example, if you sprain or jam your finger and don't take off your ring right away, swelling in the joint can make removal difficult. In that case, you may have to use a different procedure to get it off. All you'll need is a piece of dental floss about two feet long.

First, slip a few inches of the floss under the ring. The short end of the floss should point toward your hand, and the long end should extend toward the swollen joint.

Next, start wrapping the floss snugly around your finger, starting just above the ring. Each row of floss should be tight up against the last one, as if you were winding thread onto a spool. Wrap your finger until the floss extends a little beyond the swollen joint. Don't be afraid to pull the floss tight -- you want to slightly compress the swollen joint so you can pull the ring over it.

Finally, when the swollen joint is wrapped, grasp the end of the floss that is tucked under the ring, and begin to gently unwrap it. Go slowly, making sure to grasp the floss firmly. The unwinding floss will push the ring along. Remove the ring once it passes over the swollen joint, then unwind the remainder of the floss so that it doesn't block circulation to your finger.

If you can't remove the ring and you're worried that the swelling may be affecting circulation to your finger, call your doctor. You may need to have the ring cut off.

Thanks for all the tips. I will definitely be trying these tonight if the swelling from this mornings incident goes down! I had a call into my OB/GYN about another matter, and when I mentioned this she also suggested the Windex. Who would have thought.....

Hopefully I won't have to resort to getting it cut off, but you got to do what you got to do......

This worked for me too, but I'll be honest - it HURT!!! I had to get DH to do it for me.

At work when people have tried on rings that were too tight, window cleaner has worked.

I had an allergic reaction when I was pregnant. I had to have my rings cut off and all the jewelry stores were closed. My h put a thin piece of metal between my finger and my ring and cut it off himself. It was scary. The jeweler fixed it up good.

Spray Windex on your finger/ring. It would slide right off. :thumbsup2
Yep!! My SIL works is a nurse and gave us this great tip!! :thumbsup2

Put your hand in a bowl with ice water. This might reduce the swelling enough. When my mom was pregnant with my sister they had to get her wedding ring cut off.
