I've finally and officially made the decision that I am going to look for a new job in my local area either with the city, county or school district. I have been with my current job for almost 10 1/2 years and the commute takes about an hour each way. I have not been happy at my job for a few years because of the owners greed and unethical treatment towards all the employees. I have stayed by telling myself that these things go on everywhere and to some extent I have dealt with similar versions in other privately owned companies. My other reason for not wanting to leave has been the flexibility to take off work for my son's many doctors appointments and vacation time (without pay of course) when ever I wanted. Other than this, I have bare bones medical insurance and that is it. I have come to realize that I have been working for 10 years and have no retirement-no 401-K-nothing. So, I will apply for jobs that come available with the city, county and/or school district and I will keep applying till it does happen. I will stay at my current job till I make this come true and then I will give my two weeks notice. Wish me luck! :shamrock:

good for you! it's a brave thing to leave a job after 10 years!

just bear in mind that the wheels of government move slowly and a job opening can take a significant period of time to hire for a position after it's been posted/advertised. when i sat on county hiring panels the applicants often had submitted their applications a few months before and had to wait for personel to review them, the testing process, the grading process and oral boards to be schedualed. following the oral boards a ranking would determine which candidates could be interviewed for a position and it could take another couple of months before we got those names and had an opportunity to interview-even then we could wait several weeks to get approval to formaly offer the job. it can be frustrating for both the person hiring as well as the applicant!

make sure to go into the actual county or city personnel building-they often have job postings that are not advertised at all. and don't rule out any job based on the title-look at the minimum qualifications, you would be surprised at some of the jobs you never would have considered had you not read the description.

also remember-the old saying "government likes to hire government" can hold to be very true. so while a job may not be your first choice, getting into any (acceptable to you) government job opens the door to in house job opportunities that are never publicly open. we had a tremendous training program that was on the job training for a professional position-if a person met the minimum qualifications we paid them full time to be trained in a classroom setting for 3 months to learn the specifics.

and don't be overly concerned with flexibility-most government employers have a variety of alternate working scheduals (9/80, 4/10, flex hours) that employees are eligible to once their probationary period has been completed.

again congratulations on your decision!
