Wilgus had his embolization on 12/14. It was very painful (they couldn't put him to sleep during the procedure and he was in pain for 3 hours) then after the procedure he was REALLY in pain. They gave him morphine and it only made him throw up. He went without anything for pain for over 12 hours until I took the nurse and told her it had to change and they changed him from morphine to Dilaudid. That helped him. I spent 24 hours a day with him from the time of the embolization until they took him into surgery on Friday to remove the kidney.
He had 3 surgical teams. One to remove the kidney, one to remove the tumor from the vena cavae (which, unfortunately had invaded the wall of that artery so they had to remove a section) and one team to keep his liver functioning while they worked on the vena cavae. They gave him 20 units of blood during the surgery.
The surgery was more than 6 hours. They told me that they were going to keep him in a chemically induced coma for 2 days. I went to my hotel to rest, no sleep for 48 hours is wearing. The ICU nurse decided he needed to wake up. So he woke up with his sister only. I was not there. I am a terrible wife
He did so well, the doctors were so impressed. They said he was in the 95th percentile for recovery. UNTIL today. He has developed deep vein thromboses in his thighs. This is NOT good. So, he is back on total bed rest, no more walking. That's a step backwards but he is going to be fine, he has to be fine. They wanted to do a procedure to place a "filter" in his vena cavae but it is too dangerous right now because of the sutures in his vena cavae.
His mother and sister have returned to Houston (Thank God) but so has my sister--I wish she was still with me. I am alone now.
Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers. They worked. Bless you all.
