Great video produced by the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography covering how the lunar orbiter which photographed the moon prior to the Apollo missions was put together.
It used film and an onboard photo processing lab before passing it on to an analog scanner which downloaded the images to Earth based ground stations. Those stations are now part of the same Deep Space Network used by the Mars rovers, Hubble Space Telescope (fully digital photography now), and other spacecraft.
