Do I need to worry that the x-ray machine at the airport will ruin my film? Leaving Sat and not sure what to do, if anything, to protect the film I've already purchased.

You only need to be concerned if you have 800 speed film, if you put it in your luggage. If you have it scanned with you & your carry-ons, you'll be ok.

Another idea is to mail your exposed film so it will be home & developed soon after you get back.

Actually, it is 1000 speed film or higher that will experience a problem, if at all. Carry it on in your carry on stuff. You can have it hand checked if you are really worried.
I would NEVER ever trust my film to any send out place. One of the main reasons are the new scanners used in the post office, the xrays used in some will damage the film. Another is too much film gets lost. Who wants to take that chance? If you have a car and really want the film processed before you leave for home, have it done in a one hour lab, like Wal*Mart. It is not expensive and you will know if you have to reshoot something.
After reading about film it reminds me just how happy I am to have converted to digital.
