Tell me about it.

We plan on going to Hawai'i next year over DD's Christmas break. But now I'm thinking about changing it to Fiji. I really, really enjoyed Hawai'i but Fiji looks phenomenal.

If you've been what island(s) were you on, where did you stay, what activities do you recommend and would you go back?

Fiji has had some political unrest in recent years, but the situation appears to have calmed. You should read the State Department's report for travelers to Fiji before you go.

Wow! Thanks for that. Maybe I should look in to Bora Bora then. lol

Yes. We researched Fiji quite a bit for our upcoming Christmas trip. Because of the unrest, lack of good hospitals (ya just never know), we decided on Tahiti. We're visiting 3 islands, Tahiti, Mora, and Bora Bora.

I read somewhere that their good season is from May-September. Is that accurate?

Aussie here

Yes Fiji has political unrest and changes its government every 18 months ago. Indeed it just ejected the Australian ambassador over something.

BUT from what I understand from friends who have been there, the tourism $$$ is close to the largest industry in the country and the hotels are in an area well away from the capital city. There has been unrest before and the tourists were not hassled.

If something goes amiss, I would rely on the Westin etc to make sure all guests are fine.

No, they are not going to have a grade 1 trauma centre, but neither do most of the countries Disney Cruises go to on thier Bahama sailings. In Fiji's instance, if something went very badly, you would have to go to either Australia or New Zealand for emergency treatment, as I do not think there are direct flights to the USA.

I understand it is a wonderful country to visit & would love to do so some time

I went to Fiji on my honeymoon in 2001. It was wonderful!!! We flew into Nadi, and then took a bus to the Coral Coast. We stayed at the Warwick Fiji. We really didn't get out much :rotfl2: but our resort was beautiful and there were plenty of activities surrounding it. I remember taking a glass bottom boat ride, going snorkeling near the reef just off the coast from the hotel, and taking a horseback ride up a mountain and into some Fijian villages. All of these excursions were booked directly from our hotel.

If I remember correctly, Fiji was much more economical than Tahiti or Hawaii. Honestly, the people there could not have been nicer. We had a wonderful experience. Not sure if the political issues have changed since then, but I can honestly tell you we didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
