Fighting the Boredom Demon
We all have our personal demons, most of them created from experiences in our past. We have demons of self doubt, demons of not being good enough, or strong enough, or pretty enough, the list is endless. Everyone has to learn to defeat their own demons but there are also demons that we all share. These we can learn from each other how to keep at bay.
Boredom, a demon that is strong and battle hardened from the many battles we have had with it. Boredom is something that is universal but I've learned that he is stronger when your single. He pairs up with loneliness when your single. I'm learning this first hand and learning that he is still beatable but he fights harder.
Our strongest weapon against boredom is having friends to share experiences with and to plan activities with. I've learned that having a house is also a good source of projects to keep you off the couch. Weeding, cleaning, repairing, painting.....so many things around the house to do if we look.
As athletes we have our training to keep us moving. the training it's self takes a good portion of time. Besides our training we have the resting, eating and event planning to occupy our time and keep us ahead of the boredom beast.
Boredom is an especially evil one because he causes other problems. Once you plant on the couch with your chips and TV, it becomes harder to get up. There is a law of nature that a body in motion tends to stay in motion but a body at rest tries to stay at rest. So don't chill with the couch, TV and snacks till you have done your training and anything else needing done. Earn it. It's to easy to sit there and think of all the things you need to be doing and then think up lots of excuses why you can't do them now. But your soooooo bored!
Boredom affects all of us but it can be beaten back by staying after what we need to be doing and not looking for reasons not to do them. Now is also a great time to plan a trip.
Thanks for reading.
