The doctor said I had Fibroids. I have read that "Birth control pills can slow down bleeding linked to the fibroids. Has anyone else tried this?

I did try this but for me it did not work, I also had great difficulty in falling pregnant, partly due to the fibroids, so did not really want to be on the c/pill for to long, I really just had to get use to the severe bleeding, OMG I can't believe that I managed for so long, and finally I had to take a decision that I needed some help surgically, I had decided that I had been blessed to have two boys with some medical help and that as much as I would have loved more children my health was suffering, so I had the lining of my womb surgically removed, I can't believe what a diffrenece this has made to my life, I spot one day a month , no more flooding, I am therefore no longer anemic. But because the pill didn't work for me doesn't mean that it won't for you, basically what is the harm in trying it, if you are like me I got to the point where I would try anything just to relieve the symptom of the fibroids. Good luck.

That's what the doctor suggested for me too. Although they say I'm not bad enough for them to do anything surgically. I can't even imagine how bad it is for the women who has it worse.

The bcp's do help, it's not a major change, but better. :)

Funny you should post this...I just talked to my doctor yesterday about my fibroids. I've had them for a few years now. Each year, I get an ultrasound. They have been growing each time, to the point now, that if I want a hysterectomy (I know I spelled that wrong!) it's up to me! Since I'm done having children, I'm seriously considering having it done. My thinking, for getting it done is, since they keep growing, why not get it done now, before I gets to the point of really having major bleeding problems, and end up having to get it done anyway.

I just found out last year that not only do I have endometriosis, which was suspected, but I also have a couple of small fibroids.
I am on continuous b/c for the endo. I don't know what effect it is having on the fibroids.

My doctor suspects I might have them, but said we would not do anything about it. My first day of my period (sorry guys, you shouldnt' be reading this thread) is pretty heavy and once in a while I get huge clots. The first time this happened was at AKL!!! We were getting ready to go to our 8am Ps at Breakfastsaurus. I freaked out a little, but was fine. It doesn't always go like this. Sometimes my periods are perfectly normal. I am 36 and haven't used birth control of any kind in five years and have not gotten pregnant. I was so lucky to have my baby at 31. I was married at 28, on birth control for two years, off for one year and got pregnant . That's my whole history.

Wow. I was going to post a couple days ago questions about a similar topic because I'm having problems too. I'm concerned I have endometrial cancer. But maybe it's not so bad. I have a drs appt on Monday after having a biopsy, bloodwork and ultrasounds. I would be happy to take BCP because I'm 41 and past the age that I should get pregnant (even though I did want children).... Anyway, thanks for the post. It made me feel a little bit better about my prospects. By the way, I sure hope the BCP (if they put me on it) will stop the severe bleeding. It is sooooo inconvenient to say the least.
Take care all!

Although I did not have fibroids, I did have endometriosis. After struggling to get pregnant, I finally had two beautiful boys. After my second son, the Dr did a laproscopy and removed all the growths from my uterus, tubes, and ovaries. Within two years all my symptoms were back. Anemia, fatigue, severe cramps, and heavy periods. We are talking about periods every two weeks lasting six to seven days. At the age of 26 I had a complete hysterectomy. I was worried at first because I was so young, even though I new my chances of getting pregnant again was very, very, slim. Ladies it was the best thing I ever did for myself.
I did not realise how sick I was ALL the time, until I started feeling normal again. It has now be 13 years, and I feel great!
I will have to stay on hormone replacement for another five years, and then my Dr is going to ease me off of them. If you have done everything else, don't be afraid. There is a life after hysterectomy. My husband has had no complaints, and even appreciates no more PMS. Good Luck Everyone!
