I remember a long time ago, there used to be this fiber supplement pill that would fill you up before you ate meals, and it really worked for me. They're not making it anymore.

Anyway, I was reading Mary Shomon's thyroid website for some tips for my hypothyroidism, and I came across this: http://www.thyroid-info.com/fiber.htm. Check out that Dr. Levine's formula -- you get 17 grams of fiber per serving! Personally, I put a lot of faith in Mary Shomon, so if she recommends something, I check it out. I ordered some of it today. It better work because that stuff is expensive.

Do any of you take fiber for weight loss? Have you tried Dr. Levine's? Thoughts?

Marseeya,

Thanks for posting that link. When I was looking at it, it commented on making sure you take your medicine a hour before eating to help with absorption. I've been taking mine after eating breakfast (which has a lot of fiber in it), so I've been doing it wrong. Nobody told me to do otherwise.

Thanks!

Good point! Mary Shomon is a wonderful resource for anything related to thyroid disease. I usually take my synthroid first thing when I wake up, then make sure to wait at least an hour before eating.

In case anyone's wondering, I received the Dr. Levine's fiber stuff in the mail. So far, it really does make me feel full. You start out taking very small doses of it to get your body used to all that fiber, and even that small amount fills me up. Also makes me gassy, so I hope that part of it passes (not literally :teeth: ).

I'll be interested in seeing how it works for you. The nutritionist that my daughter saw said you should have 30-35 grams of fiber a day and if you can't get it in food you should take a supplement. I think the most I've been able to get in a day with food is about 15, WAY short.

I have a really difficult time doing it too. I was looking at Metamucil and Fibercon to compare, but you still only get about 3 grams of fiber per serving -- that's like 2-3 pills!

I'll continue to update with it. This stuff is really expensive, but the Dr. makes a good point, that you'll be saving money by not snacking or eating as much. We'll see. With all the eating out I do on the days I have school, I bet I could save that kind of money in a month.

I've been on this stuff a little over a week (started March 8th), and I've lost almost 3 pounds.

I'm up to the full dose now and it REALLY controls my appetite. I take it an hour before lunch and then eat either a sandwich or a Smart Ones meal. Normally I snack all afternoon, but this keeps me very filled up, so I don't snack at all except maybe a couple of crackers or a popsicle or something. I've even cut down all my portions at dinner.

:thumbsup2

Downside: Makes me gassy for about an hour or two, and I get one minor bout of the runs. TMI, I know, but it's something to consider. I probably need to be careful about taking it if I'm going to be out in public later. According to the literature, this side effect should go away after a couple of weeks.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll keep updating.
