Why does everyone take the ferry from Red Hook rather than the one at Charlotte Amalie that seems so much closer to the dock? Just wondering. I figure that there has to be a reason(or two) that I don't know about.

Thanks!!

the ride by boat is longer but the dock from St. Thomas is closer..

less of a taxi ride... just easier to do ... i guess

Huh?

Which one is easier to do?

Sorry for sounding so stupid here but I have no idea how this whole ferry thing works.

Thanks,

Joanne

I think most people go to red hook because the ferry runs more often from there. I don't know where the dock is in Charlotte amalie, but I assume you would need to take a taxi to get there as well.

We went to St. John while on our RCCL cruise this past Feb. We got off the ship as early as possible, got a taxi and were in red hook in time for the 9:00am ferry. That put us at the beach by about 9:30 or so. Had we taken the Charlotte Amalie ferry, we would have gotten to the beach around 10:00, since it is a much longer ferry ride.

The Charlotte Amalie ferry dock is right next to the Magic tender dock in downtown. So if you tender in St. Thomas, you would not need to take a taxi to the ferry.

Thanks for the replies!!

The downtoen ferry was very rough when we took it in March. On the way back we thought it was going to tip over. We took it back from St. John because we tendered in. The taxi ride to Red Hook took about 30 minutes and the roads were twisty and winding. My DD3 almost got car sick. Make sure if you take the Red Hook ferry back to St. Thomas you leave plenty of time to get through the traffic in St. Thomas back to the ship.
