even though i fell again tonight and hurt what already hurt I still can't stop thinking about our next trip to Disney next Sept. even though my legs swelled up to the point of almost bursting, I STILL WANT TO GO. I am an obsessed DISNEY FANATIC now that I know I can get around Disney on a scooter (yeah for a scooter giving Disney back to me) :yay::woohoo:

Go for it girl. Disney is the best medicine in the world!

i have to save every penny in order to be able to go. plus, we cannot afford to stay on site which lowers our cost. in order to go we have to get me a scooter or i will have to stay in the room and there is no point in going if i have to do that so we factor the scooter from an off-site company in to our costs for the trip. our trip costs are not that high given we don't stay on site and we don't do many of the Disney restaurants. For instance, one night we went to Sweet Tomatoes to eat, had a BOGO, the food was excellent and healthy :) also, if we get to go once every two year I will be grateful otherwise we will have to save and go every two years or so if we are lucky.

As long as you have a scooter [and can afford it] ... go for it.

What about checking into a scooter through your insurance company so you have a personal one? If you fly I believe you can take it on the plane. I would honestly check into that. Also, I would recommend getting a bank of some sort (there have been many threads with pictures of some of the banks on the budget board) and saving all change found. We did this last year and in 9 months time we had over $800. It was enough to cover our resort room for the week. Our tickets at the time were the military Salute ones.
If you don't already visit there, I would highly recommend the budget board for a lot of great money saving ideas.

Like you, I have become a Disney Fanatic

i was thinking about that but don't have the money for it at this time and haven't started the process of looking in to it thru medicare yet as my medicare doesn't start until Nov.

I will start visiting the budget board, I looked there once or twice.

The coin banks sound interesting :)

afford?- that's not for anyone but you [and DH] to decide.

i know. i was a bit surprised by that post. i suspect that person doesn't think that someone who is disabled and on disability should be able to save every penny they can to have a few happy days at WDW.

Don't worry about what others say, just know what YOU can do, and afford. If you can't stay onsite, then don't!! Everyone's situation is different. I'm sorry you fell, and really hope you feel better!!! Disney is for everyone, not just those who are able bodied. I"m not able bodied, and I still go!!! I do have an offer for a manual wheelchair to be given to me....and I'll probably take it. I always budget in wheelchair money just in case...this way, that extra 10 a day can go elsewhere!!! Not sure we'd use it this trip next weekend, cause it's only 2 days, and the kids would fight over it, but in May, yep. Sure am taking it.

Christie, you are such a doll :) I try to ignore negative comments but I am human so dealing with them is not always easy as most know.

I'm "ok" from the fall. I was "stupid" and did not take my cane with me and that is why I think I fell. I wanted to try and walk without it and boy oh boy did I pay. When I use it the other cheer moms and kids stare at me and it is embarrassing. Even my 6-year old said "Why weren't you using your cane?" I told her it is embarrassing and she even said "We are not embarrassed, we love you and don't want you to fall".

That is great about the wheelchair for you in case you need it. The year I fell at the Gaylord Palms, they loaned us a wheelchair. At the time we did not know my husband had a heart problem that would require three surgeries so the poor guy pushed me around in it and got so worn out as I am no small fry. I so wished it had been an electric one so that I would not have to rely on someone pushing me around. As I can't use my left arm most of the time, I could not push myself using the wheels so I did a lot of boring sitting in a corner at Disney while he took the girls on rides as I could not walk due to the fall. Should have sued the Gaylord Palms as their floor was uneven and that is why I fell. There was a 2" differential in the floor that was suppose to be even, we did not sue, too much stress.

Can't wait to see the photos from your short trip :) You are lucky you live close enough to drive as having to come up with approx. 800.00 for four tickets to FL adds so much extra expense to the trip.

Yea. I love living this close....makes it tough to save any money tho!! LOL Yea, I think I'm gonna take the WC. It does help to have it. I never know when I need it, and there is such a fine line between being okay, and doing too much. I did do too much this weekend, my right shoulder feels like I tore something. Not very good. We've been cleaning, and packing, and it happened somewhere inbetween. We have 3 dogs and a cat that we gotta get ready for us to be gone....and neighbors coming in to feed them and stuff.....so it's gotta get done. DH comes home thursday night, so he can do the final things, and pack the car. Just wonder how work is gonna do for me this week.

do you have arthritis in your shoulder? I do and can't lift my left arm up between the arthritis in my shoulder and my elbow. i've fallen so many time and always go down on my left side that it has really impacted my knees and shoulder which never hurt until i started falling.

let us know how your trip goes :) all of us are talking about our possible trip next year :) the one in my siggy that we will try and save for.

the girls gave me their pennies :) we are going to put all of our change in a mickey mouse lunch box my daughter got for her b-day a few years ago and when it is full we will take it to our bank and have it counted and use it toward the trip. we will start to refill it when it is empty :)

That's a good idea with the change, I might do that four our may trip with Dh's niece, and the great niece and nephew. Can't wait to spoil them kids!!!

It's not arthritis, it's Muscular Dystrophy. I have a rare type called FSH, and it effects the shoulders, and face, and goes down into the hips and ankles. You can google it, it'll give you LOADS of info. Sometimes I wish it was arithritis, that means I can take something, and it feels better, but NOooOOOOooo It's here to stay, and permanent, and only getting worse. UG!!! They say God doesn't give you more than you can handle....I must be VERY well trusted or something!!! Between the MD, the skin cancer, and everything else, I'm falling apart!!! How I feel somedays anyways. But, the attitude stays positive, and that's a BIG help. If your attitude gets bad, the body quickly follows!!! Anyways, have a happy Monday, and we'll talk to you later!!!!!

Out of the mouth of babes.

I'm 25 and started using a cane at 18 (now I use either a manual or power wheelchair) and one thing I realised pretty quickly was that the more comfortable I was with my mobility aid, the more other people were comfortable with it. I also think in the bigger picture it was a good mindset for me in terms of accepting my impairment. I know it's a bit controversial to say, but these days I'm of the mindset that disability and impairment are not bad things. They're just differences. And wouldn't the world be boring if we were all the same. (To be clear, I'm not saying pain is positive, but that there's nothing inherently negative about using a cane, wheelchair, etc.)

Very well said. Acceptance is a HUGE part of any mobility aid. I have leg braces, and fought them at first, but now, they're a part of me. It's tough at first admitting that "I can't do that" But it's getting easier to do.

Thank you for this, tonight I am using a cane. Last night when we went to the movies I used my can and if I had not I would have fallen as the entrance to the movie theater has small squares made in to a pattern and they are not even and my ankle turned over. If I had not had the cane I would have fallen due to the inability to catch myself due to the chronic pain my entire body including my joints are in.

Why have you had to be in a wheelchair since you were 25?

I got the change idea from the Budget thread on this forum, lol. I think it is a great motivator for the kids. My 7 year old finds pennies everywhere we go. Sometimes she will score a quarter :) lol

I rem. when the doctors (tons of them) were telling me this chronic pain was my imagination back in the day when I looked great (like a model actually) to those who said ALS, MS, MD, Lupus, etc. Now it is narrowed now to Fibromylgia.

Unfortunately, the arthritis I have is so severe that the pain never goes away and it is degenerative. My darn left should and knees never hurt and only had a mild case of arthritis until I started falling which made them chronic.

I rem. the first time someone asked me if I realized my ankles/feet looked like footballs. I was picking the girls up from school and an elderly woman asked me about my feet and I looked down and thought "OMG". As I am always in pain I guess I just thought it was another issue with Fibro. but found out about the arthritis at that point.

ttyl.
