I bought a HP all in one printer. My question is, if I don't want to have a permanent fax line, can I just plug the printer into my phone line, send my fax, then plug my phone back in? Can I use the fax like that? Just when I need it?

I don't see any reason why not. You can do the same when you want to receive a fax. Just plug it in and don't answer the phone.

We have an HP all in one, and we have our phone line routed thru the HP. From time to time we send and receive faxes (not a lot, just a couple times a month), and it's fine to just leave it in. We can answer the phone like normal without any problems. So bascially our phone line is our fax line too, so if someone happens to fax something when we're not home, we'll receive it, but we also receive messages on the answering machine on the same phone line. Hope that makes sense!

I have my all in one hooked up to my regular phone line , but I have it set up so that the answering machine in the kitchen will pick up after 4 rings and the fax machine will pick up after 5 rings. I don't get faxes too often but when I know one is coming , all I have to do is shut the answering machine off and let the fax machine pick up.

Debbie I use mine like that all the time.
